Oltre la mer salee collects revised versions of twenty-eight papers originally presented during the 21st International Congress of the Societe Rencesvals pour l'etude des epopees romanes. It includes studies by an international group of specialists in medieval vernacular epic, divided among four major themes: family relations, manuscripts, French epic in England, and travel and exchanges. Their work covers a variety of Old French and Old Occitan epics, as well as adaptations and related texts in Italian, Castilian, Brasilian Portuguese, English, and Greek. It also includes reflections on the interactions between Romance epic, the Latin language, and even the fine arts. This volume convincingly demonstrates one of the key elements of the enduring appeal of medieval Romance epic: its astonishingly international quality, both in the Middle Ages and today.

The book provides a chronological listing of sources on the legend and man is split into three distinct sections, covering the history of Charlemagne, the literature of Charlemagne and the medieval biography and chronicle of Charlemagne.

The Cycle of Guillaume D'Orange Or Garin de Monglane
Bibliography of all works, not only on the full cycle but also on Le Chanson de Guillaume and the Geste de Monglane. This is the first comprehensive critical bibliography of the Old French epic cycle of Guillaume d'Orange. As well as covering editions and studies of the twenty principal poems of the full cycle, including fragments, the bibliography includes works on La Chanson de Guillaume, the fifteenth-century prose romance derived from the cycle, and the four poems conserved only in the so-called Geste de Monglane. It offers exhaustive coverage of material published between the mid-nineteenth century and the year 2000, including book reviews. As well as listing and commenting on editions and studies of individual poems the bibliography has sections dealing with manuscript studies, studies of the cycle as a whole and groups of poems, thematic studies of characters, motifs, geography and history related to the poems. The Old-French Chanson d'Antioche has long intrigued historians and literary scholars. Unusually among epic poems, it follows closely a well documented historical event – the First Crusade – and appears to include substantial and genuine historical content. At one time it was believed to be based on an account by an eye-witness, 'Richard the Pilgrim'.
