This book was produced to commemorate the Thirty-Fifth Anniversary of the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media (SLMM), a national art organization founded in 1982 by educator, artist, and resident of Albuquerque, NM, Mary Carroll Nelson. It is a very diverse group of artists in style and medium, whose members reside across the US and Canada. 'Merge IV' was a national membership exhibition held in Albuquerque in April 2017 at the African American Performing Arts Center, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the association. The book contains images chosen from the 124 pieces of work that were included in the show. Each of the 60 artists who were featured in the exhibit have a separate page with...

Visual Journeys

The Society of Layerists in Multi-Media is an international group of artists sharing a holistic world view. The thought that unites the society is, "We are all connected. There exists a oneness and unity to everything, everyone, and the whole." This philosophical premise distinguishes it from other art societies that are based on a single medium. Layered art is distinguished not by its medium, style, or technique so much as by the individual mind of the artist who creates it. Layers are built, metaphysically as well as physically, with an emphasis on metaphoric relationships among all elements in the work. Although layers may be transparent and visible, others might be hidden, known only to their creator. They might contain buried words, objects, prayers, or symbols. Personal memories and the collective unconscious lend forms and significance to each piece of layered art.

"The Society of Layerists in Multi-Media demonstrates through its members' art the dynamic transition taking place: the collective awareness is shifting from seeing humanity as separate and disconnected, to viewing it as an integral part of the cosmic whole. The Layerists depict the magnificence of this transformed vision through metaphysical images that portray memories, feelings and impressions of the past, present and future coalescing into a single captured moment that at once reveals both the universal and personal meaning inherent within that moment. The Art of Layering: Making Connections is an important book for our troubled times because it offers the unique perspective of artists whose work serves as a visual reminder of the energetic and spiritual connections that unite us in one holistic creation moving and growing together."--Barbara Ganim, author of Drawing From the Heart: A Seven Step Program to Heal Emotional Pain and Loss, and Art and Healing: Using Expressive Art to Heal Your Body, Mind and Spirit

SLMM founder Mary Carroll Nelson spent years discovering how her fellow artists created art through their perception of an interconnectedness to all life, physical as well as metaphysical, that bridged the visible and invisible. She coined the word "Layering" to describe an art form in which artists invest their art with layers of emotions, memories, objects, and symbols that are combined into a whole, using a wide variety of mediums and styles. Nelson defined this perspective as holistic. Unique Insights is a stepping stone in SLMM's continued evolution toward increased awareness of its mission as creative artists and members with holistic intent.

Kentucky Quilts and Quiltmakers

Although they are commonplace in American homes, quilts are much more than simple patchwork bed coverings and wall adornments. While many of these beautiful and intricate works of art are rich in history and tradition, others reflect the cutting-edge talent and avant-garde mastery of contemporary quiltmakers. Kentucky Quilts and Quiltmakers: Three Centuries of Creativity, Community, and Commerce is the first comprehensive study to approach quilts as objects of material culture that have adorned homes throughout the history of the commonwealth and the country. Linda Elisabeth LaPinta highlights such topics as quiltmaking in women's history, the influence of early Black quiltmakers, popular Ke...
