This Lutheran congregation began in the 1780s in East Pennsboro Township, now Hampden Township. They built the Manor or Poplar Church in 1793. When it burned in 1806 they formed a union with the Reformed congregation a couple miles away at Friedens or Peace Church. In 1865-1866 the congregation moved into Shiremanstown and built St. John's Church.
