Veterinary Surgical Oncology provides in-depth coverage of surgical techniques for treating cancer in small animal patients. Organized by body system, each chapter presents detailed, well-illustrated descriptions of surgical procedures, with additional information on diagnostic testing, aftercare, outcomes, and prognosis. Edited and authored by members of the Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncologists, Veterinary Surgical Oncology's comprehensive coverage of surgical treatments for cancer provides an invaluable decision-making tool and is equally useful for veterinary surgeons and veterinary oncologists. The book begins with introductory chapters on the principles of surgical oncology, multimodal therapy, and interventional radiology, then presents chapters on surgical techniques in all anatomical structures, including procedures not well covered in existing literature. The first book to focus on the surgical aspects of cancer treatment, Veterinary Surgical Oncology is an essential reference for anyone with an interest in surgical oncology.
Meet the brilliant mavericks who invented the future of medicine and saved the lives of millions. The Essence of Invention tells the story of medical invention, from the development of anesthesia and safe surgery, through to the advent of vaccines against smallpox, polio, and Covid-19, that have changed the very foundation of patient care. Dr. Kieran Murphy, a renowned neuroradiologist and inventor in his own right, captures the mind of the inventor — their turmoil, their persistence, their rejection by their peers — and how a small percentage are eventually recognized. The same kind of energy that drove van Gogh or the Beatles can manifest in medicine as inventiveness and the creation o...

Leadership in Healthcare opens up the world of leadership studies to all healthcare professionals. Physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals spend thousands of hours studying the science and technology of healthcare, and years or even decades putting into practice recent findings in molecular biology, clinical diagnostics, and therapeutics. By contrast, the topic of leadership and the traits of effective leaders tend to receive remarkably little attention. Yet no less vital than an understanding of how to interpret diagnostic tests and design care plans is a grasp of healthcare's organizational side, including the operation of multidisciplinary care teams, academic departments, ...

The goal of the Institute of Medicine's Council on Health Care Technology is to promote the development and application of technology assessment in health and medicine. Among the activities cited in the congressional charge that provided for its formation, the council is to "identify needs in the assessment of health care technology." Early in its deliberations, the council decided to expand its charge to identify priority clinical conditions as well as medical technologies and practices. The process for setting assessment priorities demonstrated in this pilot study and the initial set of 20 priority assessment areas selected are in response to this expanded charge. The priority-setting group decided to undertake a pilot effort that would set a framework for national priority-setting, outline national priority-setting criteria, and use a consensus process to identify a preliminary list of priority clinical conditions and medical technologies. The priority-setting approach demonstrated here relies upon explicit criteria that are applicable at the national level and reflect the diverse needs of patients, clinicians, researchers payers, health facility managers, and policymakers.
