Primary Industries Facing Global Markets

"Food producers and other producers of primary products such as forestry increasingly face international competition, and the markets for their products increasingly become globalized. This process can provide promising opportunities to reach new markets and to increase value added by marketing new products. But there are challenges though, as new competitors show up in the domestic markets and access to the retail outlets is denied .Norway is a country with a successful export oriented aquaculture industry and more protected forestry and agricultural sectors. This book explores some of the lessons learned from these sectors in coping with international competition and in exploiting the opportunities that are offered by more open markets. The perspectives adopted come from marketing, economics as well as multidisciplinary social sciences. Each perspective is essential to paint a reliable picture of the opportunities and challenges facing primary industries."

Namibia's Fisheries

As we search urgently for a strategy of sustainable natural resource management, an international debate is brewing over destructive modern fishery methods. Namibia's Fisheries is a timely contribution to this discussion as it examines Namibia's Benguela upwelling system, an area that supports traditional and modern forms of fishery. This volume analyzes the Namibian experience in fishery management, featuring essays by researchers, Namibian fishery managers, and international specialists that cover a range of ecological and social issues. Namibia's Fisheries will be a valuable resource for researchers, conservationists, and students of fishery management.

The way we glow when having a great conversation, building off each other’s ideas, finding solutions we can all be satisfied with. The way we spark together when marching and chanting in protest. This is living democracy. Yes, the world looks bleak. Across our society there’s a mounting sense of desperation in the face of the climate crisis, gaping economic inequality and racial injustice, increasing threat of war, and a post-truth politics divorced from reality. Extinction is in the air. But what if the solutions to our ecological, social and political crises could all be found in the same approach? What if it was possible for us to not just survive, but thrive? In Living Democracy, Gre...

Rights Based Fishing

The genesis of this conference was on a quay of the port of Bergen in March 1985. Ragnar Amason suggested to Phil Neher a small, mid-Atlantic conference on recent developments in fishery management. In the event, more than twenty papers were scheduled and over one hundred and fifty conferees were registered. Logistical complications were sorted through for a summer 1988 conference in Iceland. The really innovative management programs were in the South Pacific; Aus tralia and New Zealand had introduced Individual Transferable Quotas (ITQs); and Iceland, Norway and Canada were also experimenting with quotas. It seemed to the program committee (Rognvaldur Hannesson and Geoffrey Waugh were soon on board) that these quotas had more or less characteristics of property rights. Property rights were also taking other forms in other places (time and area licenses, restrictive licensing of vessels and gear, traditional use rights). The idea of rights based fishing became the theme of the conference.
