The Politics of German Defence and Security
This study argues that 'strategic culture' provides only a partial explanation of of German military reform after the Cold War era. It demonstrates how domestic material factors were of crucial importance in shaping the pace and outcome of reform, despite the impact of 'international structure' and pressure from the EU and NATO.

Post-Imperial Brecht
Post-Imperial Brecht challenges prevailing views of Brecht's theatre and politics. Kruger focuses much of her analysis in regions where Brecht has had special resonance, including East Germany, and South Africa, where Brechtian philosophy has been vigorously employed in the anti-apartheid movement. Kruger also analyses political interpretations of Brecht in light of other key dramatists, including Heiner MÜller and Athol Fugard. The book also examines Brechtian influence on writers and philosophers such as Adorno, Benjamin, and Barthes.
Stefan Heym
Stefan Heym's uncompromising stance made him unpopular with a succession of political regimes. The Nazis, the CIA and the East German secret police all held files on him. He was Hitler's youngest literary exile; McCarthyism was to drive him from the USA; and even in what appeared his natural home - the first socialist state on German soil - he was to become the country's leading dissident. By continuing to compose in both English and German, however, he maintained an international reputation, and has been translated into over twenty languages. This study traces Heym's career principally by reference to his novels, journalism, and political essays, from his earliest works. All his novels are analysed, the major ones in depth, and English translations of all German quotations are provided. Peter Hutchinson focuses particularly on Heym's battles against Stalinism and censorship, and the way in which his courageous defiance of a repressive regime inspired others and paved the way for the 'new' eastern literature of the eighties.

Capturing Culture
The book identifies and critically analyses Hausa contemporary films known as Kannywood. The focus is on video films with particular emphasis on sources in oral literature. How traditional theatres are re-enacted and re-framed during filmmaking, and how far are traditional traits captured, changed, or enriched in video film are some issues the book negotiates on. The harmony between orature and technology, as generated by means of the transported film medium is expressed in the book. The new medium is integrated into the ongoing traditional and cultural surroundings, where native narrative traditions have been adopted into the global film medium, which is in alignment with contemporary medial culture. Yusuf Baba Gar is the lecturer for Hausa at the Department of African Studies, Humboldt University, Berlin.
