Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies for Climate Change

In recent decades there has been a growing awareness of how intricate the interactions are between human beings and the environment. Fortunately, progress has been made in understanding this relationship, and new technologies have been effective in addressing environmental problems. However belatedly, there has been an acknowledgment of the incompatibility of the world's finite resources with humankind's increasingly greater needs for them, and of how such a challenge demands broadened collaboration among engineers, social scientists, politicians and financial powers. Global agreement that the essential issues of the twenty-first century cannot be solved by any one discipline has led to the ...

Analysis of the IRAS low resolution spectra show that the 8-22 micron spectral range show a variety of emission features. The strongest features in spectra of M stars are the 10 and 18 micron silicate emission features. In addition a three-component feature with peaks at 10, 11 and 13.1 micron and a weak, broad 9-15 micron feature is present in many M variable stars. Most carbon stars show the 11.2 micron SiC emission feature as well as, in some cases, an unidentified 8-9 micron emission feature. The MS, S and SC stars show a range of emission features whose peaks range from 10 to 11.2 micron. The excess emission above the underlying photospheric continuum in the 8-22 micron region for S Mira variables shows a sharp increase for period greater than about 370 days.

This book examines citizen engagement in contemporary democratic politics and the development of new participatory forms. Based on empirical information gathered from citizens, activists and organizations, it examines the changing face of democratic participation. Advanced democracies are ‘plagued’ by the complex problem of basing political decisions on the active engagement of citizens and citizens’ organisations. Although the benefits of an active citizenry appear great, the reality is that most citizens positively embrace a relatively marginal role in organised politics. The conventional activist –citizens as active members engaged in voluntary associations and collective decision...

Astronomy and Astrophysics - Volume I

Astronomy is the science of everything – with the exception of the Earth and everything on it and inside. Astronomy has a rich heritage dating back to the myths and legends of antiquity and the course of civilization has been greatly affected by mankind’s interpretation of what they saw in the starry sky and experienced through seasonal changes associated with the Sun and Moon. Early astronomy is associated with the definition of calendars which were needed to predict the dates of such as religious festivals and the numbers of months. A gradual shift of emphasis from astronomy to its sister, astrophysics, which took place through the 19th century, is generally attributed to the measureme...
