On Violence in the Work of J.H. Prynne

Hailed as a crucial study of J.H. Prynne’s poetry, Violence in the Work of J.H. Prynne provides an accessible and comprehensive analysis of one of the world’s leading figures of contemporary poetry. This indispensable resource analyses the nexus between Prynne’s evolving political thought and his linguistic innovation over a period of three decades. Never hesitant before the difficulty of Prynne’s poetry, Hall provides an acute and skilfully articulated argument which illuminates the complexity of Prynne’s most challenging volumes. In reinventing the methodologies by which contemporary poetry can be read, Hall synthesizes earlier critical work, providing a crucial pathway into Prynne’s work—full of new insights, new inventions, and new critical understandings.

The book discusses the challenges war and conflict reporting face when confronted with major security leaks through WikiLeaks and the classified information revealed by Edward Snowden. Theoretically, the findings are related to the theories of threat society, new wars and risk-transfer warfare as well as to Johan Galtung"s theory of war and peace journalism. Analyses are inspired by critical discourse analysis as elaborated in Norman Fairclough"s and Ruth Wodak"s works.

A Global Standard for Reporting Conflict constructs an argument from first principles to identify what constitutes good journalism. It explores and synthesises key concepts from political and communication theory to delineate the role of journalism in public spheres. And it shows how these concepts relate to ideas from peace research, in the form of Peace Journalism. Thinkers whose contributions are examined along the way include Michel Foucault, Johan Galtung, John Paul Lederach, Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky, Manuel Castells and Jurgen Habermas. The book argues for a critical realist approach, considering critiques of ‘correspondence’ theories of representation to propose an innovative conceptualisation of journalistic epistemology in which ‘social truths’ can be identified as the basis for the journalistic remit of factual reporting. If the world cannot be accessed as it is, then it can be assembled as agreed – so long as consensus on important meanings is kept under constant review. These propositions are tested by extensive fieldwork in four countries: Australia, the Philippines, South Africa and Mexico.

Terrorism as Communication

Communication theories and terrorism - how can a connection be made here? Terrorism is a dominant topic in today's world: It sometimes dominates public political discussion as well as private conversations. Communication studies can help to further penetrate the phenomenon of terrorism and provide important pieces of the puzzle to grasp it in its entirety. The development of media skills among some terrorist groups makes it imperative that the "social problem of terrorism" be approached with the help of a "communications science lens.
