Molly Lamb and Bruno Bobak shot to prominence as war artists during the Second World War. Marrying shortly after the end of the war, they moved first to Vancouver and then, in 1960, to Fredericton, where they settled permanently. Molly's paintings were vibrant and colourful, featuring dynamic crowd scenes and wildflowers that seem to wave on the page. In contrast, Bruno painted near-abstract cityscapes, stunning landscapes, and distorted bodies wracked with inner torment, work that is unique in Canadian art. In this book, acclaimed author Nathan M. Greenfield brings to light the private and public lives of two of the most important figures in 20th century Canadian art. Combining archival research with Molly's diaries and letters, interviews with friends and contemporaries, and an analysis of paintings by both artists, he develops an intimate portrait of their life and art: their critical acclaim, commercial success, and a turbulent marriage that lasted over fifty years.

William Forrestall offers some of the most interesting, painterly work in contemporary Canadian art. His growing body of unique, enigmatic still life paintings has been characterized as existing in a land between complete abstraction and realistic likeness, of being simultaneously real and unreal, of forging a link between this world and the next. This new book examines William Forrestall's artistic development, from his first solo exhibition in 1986 to his most recent painting of 2009, offering the first comprehensive survey of his work. Featuring more than 40 images, including 28 colour reproductions of his egg tempera paintings, "William Forrestal: Paintings Drawings," published to coincide with a retrospective exhibition at the New Brunswick Museum, confirms Forrestall's growing reputation in Canada and abroad.

Ozias Leduc (1864-1955) was one of the most influential Quebec painters of his day, with a profound effect on younger artists such as Paul-Émile Borduas. Leduc found most of his projects in church decoration, some of which took him years to complete and are still celebrated today. His early work however remains largely unknown. This publication documents 15 still lifes, the majority executed between 1887 and 1900. The curatorial essay highlights the exploratory character of the paintings, focusing on questions of fundamental importance to Leduc: what is art, what are its theories, how does it operate? A fascinating look into the development of a young artist in the 19th century. Laurier Lacroix is Professor Emeritus at Université du Québec à Montréal.00Exhibition: Musée d'art de Joliette, Canada (03.06.-17.09.2017).

Canadian Summer

The large and growing Mitchell family, transferring their location to Montreal, can’t find a house to buy or rent. They settle, over Mother’s protests, for a remote, rickety summer house in the woods near a lake. The dangers, antics, quarrels, and fun which now unroll bring each member of the family into vivid characterization. Meanwhile we meet some delightful French Canadians and taste the special qualities of rural Quebec in the late 1940’s. Illustrated by the author.

In this, the only up-to-date critical work on still life painting in any language, Norman Bryson analyzes the origins, history and logic of still life, one of the most enduring forms of Western painting. The first essay is devoted to Roman wall-painting while in the second the author surveys a major segment in the history of still life, from seventeenth-century Spanish painting to Cubism. The third essay tackles the controversial field of seventeenth-century Dutch still life. Bryson concludes in the final essay that the persisting tendency to downgrade the genre of still life is profoundly rooted in the historical oppression of women. In Looking at the Overlooked, Norman Bryson is at his most brilliant. These superbly written essays will stimulate us to look at the entire tradition of still life with new and critical eyes.
