Problems and Perspectives of the Relationship between the Media and Human Rights

In a democratic political system, the media is often entrusted with the responsibility of guarding the rights of the people. As such, it is essential to critically look at its role and functions in our present socio-political context. This book represents a comprehensive analysis of the following core issues: the role of the media in educating, protecting and promoting human rights; the challenges facing the media and human rights; human rights reporting and coverage; and the media’s role during violations of human rights, especially with regards to women. The book also contains suggestions and measures to increase awareness on human rights. Furthermore, it discusses the existing discourse of human rights and the media in India, Nepal and Bangladesh.

GAS WARS

Prime minister of India Manmohan Singh has been accused of changing ministerial portfolios at the behest of the Reliance group. There have been claims that the group deliberately ‘squatted’ on reserves of natural gas and curtailed production in anticipation of higher prices that are administered by the government, to the detriment of the interests of the country’s people. Spokespersons of the group deny these alligations and contend that gas output from the Krishna-Godavari basin came down on account of unforeseen adverse geological surprises. Sections within the Indian government do not buy these arguments. The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has alleged, among other things, ...

DECODING STARLIGHT: AN ELEMENTARY TALE OF GENESIS

Our Universe is majestic, magnificent in its splendour and deeply mysterious at the same time. Throughout this book, we shall try to act as Cosmic Detectives. Through careful observation of some very elementary clues scattered across the sky, we try to gradually discover some of the deepest and darkest secrets or mysteries of the Universe. From our familiar shoreline on the Earth, we dare to venture into the harrowing depths of vast unknown Cosmic abyss. Believe me, it will be a fascinating journey indeed!

Visibility Algorithms in the Plane

Visibility Algorithms in the Plane

A human observer can effortlessly identify visible portions of geometric objects present in the environment. However, computations of visible portions of objects from a viewpoint involving thousands of objects is a time consuming task even for high speed computers. To solve such visibility problems, efficient algorithms have been designed. This book presents some of these visibility algorithms in two dimensions. Specifically, basic algorithms for point visibility, weak visibility, shortest paths, visibility graphs, link paths and visibility queries are all discussed. Several geometric properties are also established through lemmas and theorems. With over 300 figures and hundreds of exercises, this book is ideal for graduate students and researchers in the field of computational geometry. It will also be useful as a reference for researchers working in algorithms, robotics, computer graphics and geometric graph theory, and some algorithms from the book can be used in a first course in computational geometry.

The Partition of the Indian Subcontinent (1947) and Beyond

The book is a comprehensive study of border-related issues arising from the 1947 Partition of India. It looks at various cases of border disputes and affrays such as disputes related to the incorporation of princely states like Kashmir and Jaunpur, the agitation for the creation of new political entities, post-partition reconstruction of Punjab and old pre-partition Punjabi leaders losing their relevance, the Kamtapuri movement, Khasi and Mizo and Chin dissatisfactions, as well as the secession of East Pakistan in 1971. An important contribution to the study of borders, the volume will be useful for students and researchers of modern Indian history, colonial India, Partition studies, borderland studies, refugee studies, minority studies, political science, film studies, postcolonial studies, and South Asian studies.
