Chinese Visions of Family and State, 1915-1953
At the dawn of the twentieth century, China's sovereignty was fragile at best. In the face of international pressure and domestic upheaval, young urban radicals—desperate for reforms that would save their nation—clamored for change, championing Western-inspired family reform and promoting free marriage choice and economic and emotional independence. But what came to be known as the New Culture Movement had the unwitting effect of fostering totalitarianism. In this wide-reaching, engrossing book, Susan Glosser examines how the link between family order and national salvation affected state-building and explores its lasting consequences. Glosser effectively argues that the replacement of the authoritarian, patriarchal, extended family structure with an egalitarian, conjugal family was a way for the nation to preserve crucial elements of its traditional culture. Her comprehensive research shows that in the end, family reform paved the way for the Chinese Communist Party to establish a deeply intrusive state that undermined the legitimacy of individual rights.
Li Fengjin
The year after its founding in 1949, the People¿s Republic of China began its campaign to overturn the traditional marriage system. In order to reach audiences of limited literacy, the Chinese government produced and distributed inexpensive "comic books" to farmers and workers. Li Fengjin: How the New Marriage Law Helped Chinese Women Stand Up is a lively example of this early PRC propaganda. Written in graphic novel format, the pamphlet tells the story of the injustices the young woman Li Fengjin faced under the the old marriage system, and the freedom she finally achieved with the help of the Chinese Communist Party and its marriage law. The pamphlet is essentially a facsimile of the original, but also includes an insightful introduction, useful explanatory notes, a select bibliography, and the text of the 1950 marriage law. The translation is true to the tone of CCP propaganda. Li Fengjin provides an interesting and informative overview of an important moment in modern Chinese history, with graphics that grab student interest.

The nine empirical studies in New Narratives of Urban Space in Republican Chinese Cities, organized under the general framework of urban space, examine three critical dimensions of the great urban transformation in Republican China—social, legal and governance orders. Together these narratives suggest a new perception of this historical urbanism. While modern economic development was a major drive for Chinese urban transformation, this volume highlights the dimension of the multilayered forces that shape urban space by looking into that less quantifiable, but equally important cultural realm and by exposing the ways in which these forces created new urban narratives, which became themselves shapers of urban space and of our perception of the Republican urbanity.
In the Shadow of the Rising Sun
The authors of this 2004 volume consult Chinese and Western archival materials to examine the Chinese War of Resistance against the Japanese in the Shanghai area. They argue that the war in China was a nationalistic endeavour carried out without an effective national leadership. Wartime Chinese activities in Shanghai drew upon social networks rather than ideological positions and these activities cut across lines of military and political divisions. Instead of the stark contrast between heroic resistance and shameful collaboration, wartime experience in the city is more aptly summed up in terms of bloody struggles between those committed to normalcy in everyday life and those determined to bring about its disruption through terrorist violence and economic control. The volume offers an evaluation of the strategic significance of the Shanghai economy in the Pacific War. It also draws attention to the feminisation of urban public discourse against the backdrop of intensified violence.
