Sleep Problems: Diagnosis, Biomarkers, Interventions, and Treatments

Sleep medicine is a burgeoning field, owing to the fact that several sleep disorders may cause and/or exacerbate serious conditions like psychiatric disorders, cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and obesity and lead to an overall reduction of quality of life. Also, poor sleep increases community costs due to increased motor vehicle accidents and loss in productivity. Furthermore, while chronic sleep deprivation leads to a significant loss of quality of life, short-term sleep deprivation is a powerful therapeutic option for depression - which emphasises the very complex and still not fully understood interaction between the physiology of sleep and psychiatric disorders.

Many social groups, such as cancer patients, the elderly, schoolchildren, and people with disabilities, were particularly vulnerable to the psychosocial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In light of current data, even the WHO suggests that the psychological context of the pandemic may have caused more psychological damage than World War II. Some researchers also infer the existence already of a post...

Novel Technologies in the Diagnosis and Management of Sleep-disordered Breathing

Sleep-disordered breathing, ranging from habitual snoring to severe obstructive sleep apnea, is highly prevalent and represents a growing global healthcare burden. Besides disrupting sleep, sleep-disordered breathing leads to detrimental outcomes such as excessive daytime sleepiness, neurocognitive impairment, and increased cardiometabolic morbidities. The gold standard diagnostic procedures (e.g., in-lab polysomnography) are cumbersome and standard parameters derived from sleep studies often yield poor long-term prognostic value. Hence, there is a need for innovative diagnostic technologies and novel sleep metrics to enable simple diagnosis and tailored disease management.

Changes in sleep patterns associated with old age include disturbed sleep onset, an increase in sleep fragmentation, more frequent daytime dysfunction, and less slow-wave sleep than younger adults. Sleep is a complex physiological process critical to our health and survival; the many functions of sleep range from cerebral metabolic waste clearance and energy conservation to supporting cognitive performance and psychological well-being. Insufficient sleep ha...
