Iron-Based Superconducting Thin Films

This book provides a modern introduction to the growth, characterization, and physics of iron-based superconducting thin films. Iron pnictide and iron chalcogenide compounds have become intensively studied key materials in condensed matter physics due to their potential for high temperature superconductivity. With maximum critical temperatures of around 60 K, the new superconductors rank first after the celebrated cuprates, and the latest announcements on ultrathin films promise even more. Thin film synthesis of these superconductors began in 2008 immediately after their discovery, and this growing research area has seen remarkable progress up to the present day, especially with regard to th...

Sigma Receptors

This book provides an update on sigma receptors, and summarizes recent advances in the medicinal chemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology of sigma receptors. It describes the functional effects mediated by these receptors and the potential clinical implications of these actions. The information is put in a historical perspective. This provides a launching point from which future studies and research directions can easily be developed.

Epstein-Barr Virus-associated T/NK-cell Lymphoproliferative Diseases

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated T/NK-cell lymphoproliferative diseases (EBV-T/ NK-LPDs) are a group of mostly neoplastic diseases of unknown etiology. These diseases are characterized by ectopic infection of EBV in T or NK cells, that are unusual cellular targets for the B-lymphotropic virus. Multiple entities of EBV-T/ NK-LPDs can be diagnosed in a single patient and one entity of EBV-T/NK-LPDs may evolve into another during the clinical course, suggesting a common mechanism in the pathogenesis, including a genetic predisposition. Treatment of these diseases is difficult and often requires hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The research topic “Epstein-Barr virus-associated T/NK-...

A research project at the Tokyo Institute of Technology – dedicated to fostering innovation in the field of nanomaterials – was selected as one of the 21st Century COE (Center of Excellence) programs. The achievements of this COE program, which builds on the strong tradition of materials science in the Institute, are summarized within this book. Nanomaterials: Research Towards Applications is divided into four main parts: - Revolutionary Oxides - State-of-the-Art Polymers - Nanostructure Design for New Functions - Nanostructure Architecture for Engineering Applications - Each section consists of three or four chapters related to inorganic, organic and metallic nanomaterials

Carbon Nanotube and Related Field Emitters

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have novel properties that make them potentially useful in many applications in nanotechnology, electronics, optics and other fields of materials science. These characteristics include extraordinary strength, unique electrical properties, and the fact that they are efficient heat conductors. Field emission is the emission of electrons from the surface of a condensed phase into another phase due to the presence of high electric fields. CNT field emitters are expected to make a breakthrough in the development of field emission display technology and enable miniature X-ray sources that will find a wide variety of applications in electronic devices, industry, and medical ...
