Risks in the Making

In recent decades, insurance companies, scientists, and public officials have debated the potential use of genetic testing in insurance decisions. With Risks in the Making, Ine van Hoyweghen alters the terms of the debate, moving it from abstract, theoretical grounds to the question of how insurance companies actually work. Through an empirical ethnographic study of life insurance in Belgium, van Hoyweghen reveals fascinating and important details about insurance practices and risk management, underscoring the diversity of insurance markets, underwriting practices, and strategies.

Genetic Discrimination and Genetic Privacy in a Comparative Perspective

During the last decades, a better understanding of the influence of genetic factors on the onset of illness and disease has evolved. Unfortunately, however, the information revealed by genetic tests is not always accurate and reliable and its probabilistic value is often limited. Throughout the world, the possibility of genetic testing and the availability of individual genetic information have therefore caused increasing social concern, especially since many actors outside the medical profession, such as health and life insurance companies and employers, have shown a growing interest in individual genetic information. In many states, as well as on the international level, there is an ongoin...

After the new social democracy

This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Social democracy has made a political comeback in recent years, especially under the influence of the ‘Third Way’. Not everyone is convinced, however, that ‘Third Way’ social democracy is the best means of reviving the Left's project. This book considers this dissent and offers an alternative approach. Bringing together a range of social and political theories, it engages with some contemporary debates regarding the present direction and future of the Left. Drawing upon egalitarian, feminist and environmental ideas, the book proposes that the social democratic tradition can be renewed but only if the dominance of conservative ideas is challenged more effectively. It explores a number of issues with this aim in mind, including justice, the state, democracy, new technologies, future generations and the advances in genetics.

Race, Ethnicity and Nation

"Race, ethnicity and nation are all intimately linked to family and kinship, yet these links deserve closer attention than they usually get in social science, above all when family and kinship are changing rapidly in the context of genomic and biotechnical revolutions. Drawing on data from assisted reproduction, transnational adoption, mixed race families, Basque identity politics and post-Soviet nation-building, this volume provides new and challenging ways to understand race, ethnicity and nation."--Back cover
