The Permian of Northern Pangea
The Permian was a remarkable time period. It represents the maximum stage of Pangean continental assembly, includes a major global climatic shift from glacial to nonglacial conditions (icehouse-greenhouse transition), and is ter minated by one of the most profound faunal/floral extinction events in the Earth's history. The Geology of Central Europe
Volume 1 focuses on the evolution of Central Europe from the Precambrian to the Permian, a dynamic period which traces the formation of Central Europe from a series of microcontinents that separated from Gondwana through to the creation of Pangaea. Separate summary chapters on the Cadomian, Caledonian and Variscan orogenic events as well as on Palaeozoic magmatism provide an overview of the tectonic and magmatic evolution of the region. These descriptions sometimes extend beyond the borders of Central Europe to take in the Scottish and Irish Caledonides as well as the Palaeozoic successions in the Baltic region.
Paleoalgology
Prior to the 3rd International Symposium on Fossil Algae, held in Golden, Colorado in August of 1983, a 3-day fieldtrip concentrating on Recent algal distribution in southern Florida was led by Robert N. Ginsburg and his associates from Miami. A post-symosium fieldtrip to the West Texas-southern New Mexico region was led by Don Toomey and Jack Babcock. This fieldtrip examined Precambrian and Paleozoic algal carbonates in a region characterized by superb outcrop exposures, and included the famous Permian Reef complex. The Toomey-Babcock fieldtrip resulted in a unique fieldguide published by the Colorado School of Mines (1983), and issued to all participants of the symposium. The symposium itself was held from August 15 through Augsut 17 on the campus of the Colorado School of Mines where Professor J. Harlan Johnson, to whose memory this volume is dedicated, spent so much of his career studying fossil algae. The symposium sessions were held for 3 days, and during that time 40 papers were presented and discussed. A I-day fieldtrip, led by John L. Wray, to examine Late Paleozoic phylloid algal carbonates exposed in the nearby Rocky Mountains, concluded the formal meetings.
Advances in Stromatolite Geobiology
Stromatolites are the most intriguing geobiological structures of the entire earth history since the beginning of the fossil record in the Archaean. Stromatolites and microbialites are interpreted as biosedimentological remains of biofilms and microbial mats. These structures are important environmental and evolutionary archives which give us information about ancient habitats, biodiversity, and evolution of complex benthic ecosystems. However, many geobiological aspects of these structures are still unknown or only poorly understood. The present proceedings highlight the new ideas and information on the formation and environmental setting of stromatolites presented at the occasion of the Kalkowsky Symposium 2008, held in Göttingen, Germany.

Coated Grains
Coated grains have always attracted attention, at first of naturalists, and later of geologists, and the interest in these peculiar bodies was re lated both to their intriguing form and their significance in facies inter pretation and sedimentology and to their relevance to accumulations of hydrocarbons and other mineral deposits. This resulted in numerous publications on this subject, and the intention of this volume is to sum marize the present state of knowledge on coated grains.
