On XXI Winter Universiads 2003, CISM offered its scientific contribution by hosting a conference on mechanics applied to sports and, in general, to human movement. The conference was conceived as a chance to overview experiences gained from several operators working on different aspects of biomechanics. The reader will face in these proceedings bioengineering aspects, control issues, techniques for the optimization of human performances as well as methods for the improvement of athletic equipments and devices. Biomechanical data and signal processing, biomaterials and robotics complete the proposed framework. Some works were consistent with the fact that 2003 was designated as European Year of Disabled People. Indeed, many innovations in sport and biomechanics could suggest interesting rehabilitative applications and a better prevention of some pathologies due to the exercise of some normal activities like professional cycling. Cornflower Blue

Based on true events, Cornflower Blue is a tense thriller that explores the troubled legacy of the Bosnian War. On the night of the eleventh of July, two elite Serbian soldiers are on sentry duty at the Topcider military camp. The next morning, they are found dead. A military court declares them victims of a ritual suicide, and the investigation is closed. But inconsistencies in the official tribunal draw criminologist Milena Lukin to the case. What did the two guardsmen see on that fateful night, a date marking the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide? Up against a military complex with a history to hide, Milena soon finds herself in grave danger. Meticulously researched and rich in historical detail, Cornflower Blue is a gripping tale that bravely addresses one of the darkest hours in Europe’s recent history. “An exciting thriller, a story about the worst depths of human nature—but also a clever, nostalgic, loving homage to Belgrade and its inhabitants.”—Der Tagesspiegel, on the German edition

Inclusive Growth in Africa

Inclusive Growth in Africa analyzes the concept of inclusion within the challenges facing Africa’s rapidly growing economies, where rising affluence for some has been accompanied almost everywhere with rising inequality. Using a combination of political economy analyses, sector studies and econometric models, the contributors delve into a range of areas associated to the new realities on the continent. Topics covered include issues of disability, corruption, capital flight, and their implications for economic sustainability. There is also a discussion of the impact on development of dependence on externally determined prices for Africa’s natural resources. Other sector analyses look at agriculture and wind power, and the innovations required to make a difference for the poorer majority. The book comprises of a rich array of essays on socio-economic inclusion in Africa by authors drawn from academia, African think tanks and international organizations. It would be of interest to scholars and students of many disciplines, including: Economics, Sociology, Development Studies, and African Studies.

Aerodynamics of Road Vehicles

The detailed presentation of fundamental aerodynamics principles that influence and improve vehicle design have made Aerodynamics of Road Vehicles the engineer’s “source” for information. This fifth edition features updated and expanded information beyond that which was presented in previous releases. Completely new content covers lateral stability, safety and comfort, wind noise, high performance vehicles, helmets, engine cooling, and computational fluid dynamics. A proven, successful engineering design approach is presented that includes: • Fundamentals of fluid mechanics related to vehicle aerodynamics • Essential experimental results that are the ground rules of fluid mechanics...

The Bugis

The Bugis, who number about three million, live for the most part in the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi: they are among the most fascinating peoples of maritime Southeast Asia, and the least known. Their image in legend and modern fiction is of bold navigators, fierce pirates and cruel slave traders, but most are in fact farmers, planters and fishermen. Although they are an Islamic people, they maintain such pre-Islamic relics as transvestite pagan priests and shamans. Their colorful nobility claims descent from the ancient gods, yet owes its power to social consensus. This book is the first to describe the history of the Bugis. It ranges from their origins 40,000 years ago to the pre...

What is the status of indigenous religious rights in the world today? Despite important legal advances in the protection of indigenous religious beliefs and practices at the international and national levels, there are still many obstacles to the full implementation of these provisions. Using a unique large-scale comparative approach, this book aims to identify the fundamental issues that characterize the law of indigenous religions in several countries, as well as certain avenues that may prove useful in state implementation of the provisions of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples regarding practice, promotion, transmission, protection, and access to spiritual heritage.
