We are playing relatives offers a comprehensive survey of literary writing in the Malay language. It starts with the playful evocations of language and reality in the Hikayat Hang Tuah, a work that circulated on the Malay Peninsula in the eighteenth century, and follows the Malay literary impulse up to the beginning of the twenty-first century, a time when the dominant notions of Malay literature seem to fade away in the cyberspace created on the island of Java, and the Hikayat Hang Tuah's play and dance on the sounds of Malay words seem to be infused with a new vitality. We are playing relatives covers a highly heterogeneous group of texts published over a long period of time in many places in Southeast Asia. The book is organized around a discussion of related texts that are crucial in the rise of the notion of 'Malay literature'.

The Kaligis Success Factor

Otto Cornelis Kaligis, a man whom Anand Krishna calls "the law icon", is appreciative to Anand`s effort in writing this impressive work, which is based on O.C. Kaligis` life-story, A Man with Million Surprises. It is Kaligis` success as a man of spirit and his honorable personality that deeply impressed Anand and urged him to sublimate Kaligis` views and ideals in his writing and to share them here with us. O.C. Kaligis` is a voice in the wilderness. Amidst the rule of lawlessness and misappropriation of the legal system, judiciary, as the constitution, Kaligis stands firm in his position as the protector of law. His life, his thoughts, and above all his faith in the cause of justice have inspired many, and will continue to do so. This book is a tribute to his vision and dedicated to the younger generations to come, to carry on with the grandsire`s mission and be the torch bearers of justice for one and all....

Style and Intersubjectivity in Youth Interaction

This book examines how style and intersubjective meanings emerge through language use. It is innovative in theoretical scope and empirical focus. It brings together insights from discourse-functional linguistics, stylistics, and conversation analysis to understand how language resources are used to enact stances in intersubjective space. While there are numerous studies devoted to youth language, the focus has been mainly on face-to-face interaction. Other types of youth interaction, particularly in mediated forms, have received little attention. This book draws on data from four different text types - conversation, e-forums, comics, and teen fiction - to highlight the multidirectional natur...

Traditions Redirecting Contemporary Indonesian Cultural Productions

This volume is the result of a conference held in October 2015 in connection with the Frankfurt Book Fair discussing developments that are considered important in contemporary Indonesian cultural productions. The first part of the book reflects on the traumatic experiences of the Indonesian nation caused by a failed coup on October 1, 1965. In more general theoretical terms, this topic connects to the field of memory studies, which, in recent decades, has made an academic comeback. The focus of the chapters in this section is how certain, often distressing, events are represented in narratives in a variety of media that are periodically renewed, changed, rehearsed, repeated, and performed, i...

This book analyses the relation between state and religion in Indonesia, considering both the philosophical underpinning of government intervention on religious life but also cases and regulations related to religious affairs in Indonesia. Examining state regulation of religious affairs, it focuses on understanding its origin, history and consequences on citizens’ religious life in modern Indonesia, arguing that while Indonesian constitutions have preserved religious freedom, they have also tended to construct wide-ranging discretionary powers in the government to control religious life and oversee religious freedom. Over more than four decades, Indonesian governments have constructed a va...
