A NATO Advanced study Institute on "Receptors, Membrane Trans port and Signal Transduction", was held on the Island of Spet sai, Greece, from August 16-27, 1988, in order to consider re cent developments in membrane receptor research, membrane trans port and signal transduction mechanisms. These topics were put in the larger context of current knowledge on the structure and function of membranes; connections between different fields of research were established by in-depth dis cussions of energy transduction and transport mechanisms. Post-Translational Modifications of Proteins discusses several important topics of interest to researchers and students in protein chemistry and biochemistry, including the occurrence and function of hydroxylated residues and the three enzymes required for their formation; the damaging effects of reactions between sugars and proteins; ADP-riboosylation of proteins outside the nucleus; and Monod, Wyman, and Changeux's concerted model for allosteric control of enzyme activity exemplified by studies on glycogen phosphorylase. The application of Fast Atom Bombardment Mass Spectometry (FAB-MS) to studies on the structure and biosynthesis of various oligosaccharide moieties in protein is examined, and the understanding of the structural diversity and function of glycoprotein oligosaccharides is discussed in this volume.

In contrast to animals, plants are immobile and, thus, cannot leave a drastically changed environment. Therefore, plants have developped specific strategies involving particular signal and transduction systems as well as a form of cellular organization that allow them to buffer against sudden changes in external conditions. This state-of-the-art summary written by leading scientists deals with: - the most recent data available on the molecular mechanism involved in the response of plant cells to different stimuli; - the critical domaine of ignorance such as the signifi cance of site occupancy of receptors for growth substances; - the estimation of the applicability of new techniques such as electrophysiology, cell imaging and DNA recombinant technology; - directions for future work.
The Workshop on "Evolutionary Tinkering in Gene Expression" which was held at the end of August 1988. was planned to celebrate 20 successful Advanced Study Institutes (A. S. I.) in Molecular and Cell Biology. The first Institute was held in 1966 on the Island of Spetsai. after a N. A. T. O. suggestion and was entirely financed by N. A. T. O. The success was immediately so great that the Institute grew very rapidly and in the following years. N. A. T. O .• E. M. B. O. (since 1972) and F. E. B. S. (since 1981) co-sponsored it. Since the start of the AS!. the U. S. National Science Foundation has granted travel money for a limited number of American participants each year. In addition. the course was supported by minor industrial subsidies of varying amounts which enabled the organizers to improve some of the local facilities particularly with respect to the lecture hall. In particular. Boehringer Mannheim has contributed since 1966. Furthermore. the Greek Ministry of Science and Culture has provided support at least for a social event during each ASI.
Even though transmitter release and re-uptake are very complementary and physically in close proximity, researchers usually focus on only one of these two aspects. This volume, however, covers both processes and brings together two major presynaptic events in transcellular communication. It comprises 24 chapters and is divided into two parts: Part I, Neurotransmitter Release, and Part II, Neurotransmitter Uptake. The included topics range from ultrastructure and molecular control mechanisms to pathophysiology of some diseased states. Neuronal as well as non-neuronal mechanisms are treated. The concluding chapter emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and provides a link between the events in the presynaptic terminal and behavior.
The meeting on "Dynamics of Membrane Assembly.", sponsored by NATO Scientific Affairs Division as an Advanced Study Institute and by FEBS as a Lecture Course was held in Cargese, France, in June 1991. The program included introductory lectures, specialized up-to-date contributions and poster sessions. Emphasis was laid on the new developments in the field of membrane biogenesis, in particular on the biosynthesis of phospholipids and the application of modern genetic techniques in these studies; on the membrane insertion and translocation of proteins; on intracellular protein and membrane traffic; and on the mutual interactions between the various events occurring during membrane biogenesis. Much progress in these research areas has been made in recent years and the ASI provided an excellent opportunity to illustrate this progress in comparison with previous meetings on a similar topic. Not only graduate students and postdocs took advantage from this program but also experienced scientists were given the opportunity to obtain a complete overview of recent progress and the remodelling of ideas and concepts.
Provided here is a comprehensive examination of the basic and clinical condition of three innovative and promising approaches to cancer therapy, which may support or even substitute chemotherapy: differentiation, immunomodulation, and inhibition of angiogenesis. Differentiation shouldnormalize neoplastic cells and make them compatible with the host. Its feasibility with retinoids, interferons, chemotherapeutic and other agents is discussed. Modulation by biological agents, cytotoxic effector cells and drugs is considered in attempts to boost endogenous antitumour defenses and/or to render neoplastic cells more susceptible to the immune attack of the host. Finally, the important aspect of interfering with tumour blood vessel development and function is taken into account. Consideringthe importance that chemotherapy has in cancer treatment and in view of a more and more integrated strategy, the relationship between the aforementioned approaches and chemotherapeutic agents and chemoresistance is treated in detail.
Presented here is an analysis of plant development and plant metabolism using the tools of genetics and molecular biology, such as mutant analysis, mutation tagging, mapping using polymorphic characters and basic molecular biology techniques. Studies with a range of model genetic organisms, most notably maize and Arabidopsis, are included. The reader gains a comprehensive view of the subject which is more and more of both scientific and industrial interest. The value of basic research in plants is highlighted and examples where basic studies have led to applications in agricultural biotechnology are given.
