Combinatorics is the theory of finite sets. A wide, amorphous, primordial subject matter. It was decided to emphasize the theory of simple general or homogeneous structures at the Symposia, and this volume collects the papers presented. With its numerous and varied open questions and new methods and results, extending from the solution of a century-old problem on designs to algebro-geometric and number and function theoretic studies, the hope is that this volume reflects work done and in progress, and will contribute to the growth and change in combinatorics.
A statement, without proof, is made for polynomials of best approximation to a given function on a real finite point set, E. These are important in numerical computation where they have various properties in common, especially those relating to oscillation of the difference on E.

This volume is a selection from the 281 published papers of Joseph Leonard Walsh, former US Naval Officer and professor at University of Maryland and Harvard University. The nine broad sections are ordered following the evolution of his work. Commentaries and discussions of subsequent development are appended to most of the sections. Also included is one of Walsh's most influential works, "A closed set of normal orthogonal function," which introduced what is now known as "Walsh Functions".
