In his short story “The Hunger Artist,” Kafka imagined the theatrical career of a “professional faster” whose performance consists merely in displaying his own starving body before an avid audience. Kafka thus paradoxically suggested that hunger, mere emptiness working its way through declining bodies, may be a privileged theatrical object. Theater has always been the site of visionary hopes for a reformed national future and a space for propagating ideas, both cultural and political, and such a conceptualization of the histrionic art is all the more valuable in the post-9/11 era. The essays in this volume address the concept of «Americanness» and the perceptions of the «alien» - as ethnic, class or gendered minorities - as dealt with in the work of American playwrights from Anna Cora Mowatt, through Rachel Crothers or Susan Glaspell, and on to Sam Shepard, David Mamet, Nilo Cruz or Wallace Shawn. The European Avant-Garde: Text and Image is an interdisciplinary collection of thirteen essays relating to the study of European Avant-Garde movements between 1900 and 1940. The essays cover both literary and artistic subjects, across geographical, linguistic and disciplinary boundaries. Various aspects of the English, Irish, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Polish avant-gardes are explored, examining both diverse literary genres such as prose, poetry and drama, and specific avant-garde movements such as Futurism and Surrealism.
