The importance of stem cells for various treatment purposes came to be realized after the advent of its prolific research. Stem cells are being popularly harvested from many sources such as embryo and bone marrow. However, harvesting and reaping the beneficial effects of stem cells from dental pulp is still cradling in its infancy. Indeed, there is a dearth of information on the detailed procedure of harvesting the stem cells from the dental pulp. This book is a compendium which highlights on the procedures of harvesting the stem cells from dental pulp and its characterization, with the aim to trigger the interests of the readers who are keen to venture further in this field. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity are among the essential properties to be fulfilled by any dental materials. This is to ensure that they are safe for use before they are applied into patient’s oral cavity and onto the teeth. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is one of the biocompatible dental materials widely used clinically in the field of endodontic and restorative dentistry. Nevertheless, MTA has some drawbacks related to its long setting time and it is also very costly. As such, white Portland cement (WPC) has undergone various investigation to determine if it could replace MTA for clinical application. Hence, this special book gives some information related to Malaysian WPC, in particular, and compares its properties with the established commercialized MTA in terms of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. It is hoped that this book will provide the first new insight about Malaysian WPC, which has the potential to be an alternative material for use in clinical dentistry.
Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of biotechnology, this book covers the role of targeted delivery of polymeric nanodrugs to cancer cells, microbial detoxifying enzymes in bioremediation and bacterial plasmids in antimicrobial resistance. It addresses modern trends such as pharmacogenomics, evaluation of gene expression, recombinant proteins from methylotrophic yeast, identification of novel fermentation inhibitors of bioethanol production, and polyhydroxyalkanoate based biomaterials. The book highlights the practical utility of biotechnology and bioinformatics for bioenergy, production of high value biochemicals, modeling molecular interactions, drug discovery, and personalized medicine.
The studies on genetic disorders have been rapidly advancing in recent years as to be able to understand the reasons why genetic disorders are caused. The first Section of this volume provides readers with background and several methodologies for understanding genetic disorders. Genetic defects, diagnoses and treatments of the respective unifactorial and multifactorial genetic disorders are reviewed in the second and third Sections. Certainly, it is quite difficult or almost impossible to cure a genetic disorder fundamentally at the present time. However, our knowledge of genetic functions has rapidly accumulated since the double-stranded structure of DNA was discovered by Watson and Crick in 1956. Therefore, nowadays it is possible to understand the reasons why genetic disorders are caused. It is probable that the knowledge of genetic disorders described in this book will lead to the discovery of an epoch of new medical treatment and relieve human beings from the genetic disorders of the future.
Biocompatibility is an essential criteria for a dental material as to ensure safety for the patients before it is placed into the oral cavity. Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) is one of the most biocompatible dental restorative material and it has been used widely in clinical application. Nevertheless, conventional GIC has some drawbacks such as poor physical and mechanical properties hence lead to the development of nano-hydroxyapatite-silica (nano-HA-silica) fillers. These filler is added to conventional GIC to increase the material’s strength and it has undergone some evaluation in terms of its properties. We introduce this special book to give information regarding this novel material and discuss about its cytotoxicity, cell attachment and dentinogenic differention properties in response to Dental Pulp Stem Cells and selected odontogenic gene markers. It is hope that this book will provide new insight about this novel material which has the potential to be an alternative material for use in restorative dentistry.
Frontiers in Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research Volume 10 [Edited for Volume 10] Stem cell and regenerative medicine research is an important area of clinical research which promises to change the face of medicine as it will be practiced in the years to come. Challenges in the 21st century to combat diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and retinal disorders, among others, may well be addressed employing stem cell therapies and tissue regeneration techniques. Frontiers in Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research brings updates on multidisciplinary topics relevant to stem cell research and their application in regenerative medicine. The series is essential reading for r...
The dental research is in a stage of rapid development and growth which focussing on pain alleviation and defect restoration in patients applying technological advancements. These include protocol optimisations to benefit the end user, innovation of new biomaterials and further exploration of stem cells for advancing techniques in tissue engineering and regenerative dentistry. This book, a compilation of recent advances in dental science gathered from the vast experiences of researchers in the School of Dental Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, would hopefully inspire interest in those who wish to venture further in these fields of research.
The significance of stem cells harvested from various sources came into limelight after reaping its beneficial effects in tissue engineering. However, there is a dearth of information specifically related to tissue engineering and regenerative dentistry. This book is an informative compendium which highlights on the basic principles of tissue engineering, the different approaches that can be adopted for the construction of oral mucosa model and three-dimensional cell culture, as well as its advantages and limitations directed towards the future directions; thus, triggering the interests of those who are keen to navigate further into this area of research.
