Metaphors are ubiquitously used in the humanities to bring the tangibility of the concrete world to the elaboration of abstract thought. Drawing on this cognitive function of metaphors, this collection of essays focuses on the evocative figures of the ‘gateway’ and the ‘wall’ to reflect on the state of postcolonial studies. A scrupulous study of Shakespeare’s The Tempest and its most comprehensive rewriting Indigo, or Mapping the Waters by Marina Warner. Taking as its focus representations of femininity and the other, the study scrutinises the various implications of three concepts: ambivalence, liminality and plurality in terms of their relevance to the conjunctures of postfeminism and post-colonialism, proposing that postfeminist discourse is in search of a new ethics and perspective that mainly champion these three terms through the employment of intertextuality as a strategy. The study is careful to carry out a comparative analysis of the works in terms of both poetics and politics. Informed by interdisciplinarity, the study explores how The Tempest destabilises itself, inviting a deconstructionist reading in terms of its relation to patriarchal and colonial dynamics ingrained in the play and how Indigo takes its substantial space among other rewritings of The Tempest by presenting new and imaginative ways of seeing the female and feminised figures in the play.
This collection takes as its starting point the ubiquitous representation of various forms of mental illness, breakdown and psychopathology in Caribbean writing, and the fact that this topic has been relatively neglected in criticism, especially in Anglophone texts, apart from the scholarship devoted to Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea (1966). The contributions to this volume demonstrate that much remains to be done in rethinking the trope of “madness” across Caribbean literature by local and diaspora writers. This book asks how focusing on literary manifestations of apparent mental aberration can extend our understanding of Caribbean narrative and culture, and can help us to interrogate the norms that have been used to categorize art from the region, as well as the boundaries between notions of rationality, transcendence and insanity across cultures.
What are the different contours of defining a subject? How does a subject form in the act of resilience? This book critically engages with NATO’s two main referent objects of security: civilisation and individuals. By rethinking the seemingly natural assumption of these two referent objects, it suggests the epistemological importance of an unconscious dimension to understand meaning formation and behaviour change in international security. The book provides a historicised and genealogical approach of the idea of civilisation that is at the core of the Alliance, in which human needs, narratives, and security arrangements are interconnected. It suggests that there is a Civilised Subject of Security at the core of modern Western security that has constantly produced civilised and secure subjects around the world, which explains NATO’s emergence around a civilisational referent. The book then proceeds by considering the Individualisation of Security after the Cold War as another stage of the civilising process, based on NATO’s military operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
