Joseph Coulson (son of Thomas Coulson) was born in Derbyshire, England. He married Margaret (surname unknown) and immigrated to the United States. They settled in Germantown, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After a brief stay in that area, they moved on to West Nottingham in Cecil Co., Maryland. Both Joseph and Margaret died within a few days of each other and were buried in the "Old Friends" burying ground in West Nottingham. Descendants lived in Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois and elsewhere.

Joseph Coulson, son of Thomas Coulson and Ann Burrow, was born 2 July 1669 in Hartshorne, Derbyshire, England. He emigrated and settled in Pennsylvania. He married Margaret Evans. They had two sons, Thomas (1703-1763) and Samuel. Joseph, Margaret and Samuel all died in 1717 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Thomas married Martha Wiley. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
