Environments of Exile
Forced migration always takes place within specific cultural, social, political, and spatial environments. This volume focuses on the interaction between those forced to migrate and their environments in the contexts of escape and exile from Nazi-occupied Europe. Forced emigration from Nazi Germany was a global phenomenon that took refugees to regions they often knew very little about. Not only did they have to adapt to foreign cultures, but also to unfamiliar natural environments that often exposed them to severe temperature conditions, droughts, rainy seasons, and diseases. While some refugees prepared for the natural conditions of their exile destination, others acquired environmental knowledge at their host countries or were able to adapt prior knowledge to the new environment. Consequently, specific knowledge about the environment had a large influence on the forced migration experience.

Spatiality at the Periphery in European Literatures and Visual Arts analyzes the impact migrations, both internal and external, have on Europe’s literary and visual representations in the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. The volume aims to subvert a centripetal reading of European cultural production by including peripheral thinkers, writers, and visual artists operating in transcultural contexts. The essays highlight and investigate the fertile artistic discourses generated in the spatial peripheries outside of Europe or its inner peripheries. The volume addresses the need for geocritical readings that overcome the engrained dichotomy of centers-peripheries. By doing so, the book brings a more nuanced approach to national literatures and proposes the idea of “contact zones of imaginative interaction”.

Even as many writers strive towards an ideal of authenticity, they maintain that no representation can do justice to the terror and violence of war.
