The rash of school shootings in the late 1990s has generated a tremendous amount of public concern about youth aggression and violence. But students, trainees, and professionals who work with children and adolescents have had no concise or systematic survey of our current knowledge about causes and effective approaches to intervention and prevention on which to draw. Youth Aggression and Violence has filled the void. Comprehensive and readable, it: * utilizes theory and research from the developmental psychology of "normal" children and adolescents, as well as material on "abnormal" forms of development, such as disruptive behavior disorders and juvenile delinquency; * situates youthful aggr...

In the churning aftermath of the turbulent sixties, teenager Seth Wickman attempts to lead a quiet life on his parents' farm. One August evening his serenity is disrupted when he receives a call from a frantic neighbor, Wylie Barone, claiming to have just seen a strange light in the dark woods beyond his home. Skeptical yet curious, Seth responds to Wylie's plea without delay and soon witnesses a glowing, green figure slowly emerging from behind a stand of tall pine trees. Much to his chagrin, Seth eventually realizes he has been lured into a hoax perpetrated by Wylie and another mutual friend, Wade Hotchner. Humiliated and wishing very much to escape the butt of a joke, Seth blindly reaches...

The Metaphysics of Virtual Reality

Computers have dramatically altered life in the late twentieth century. Today we can draw on worldwide computer links, speeding up communications by radio, newspapers, and television. Ideas fly back and forth and circle the globe at the speed of electricity. And just around the corner lurks full-blown virtual reality, in which we will be able to immerse ourselves in a computer simulation not only of the actual physical world, but of any imagined world. As we begin to move in and out of a computer-generated world, Michael Heim asks, how will the way we perceive our world change? In The Metaphysics of Virtual Reality, Heim considers this and other philosophical issues of the Information Age. W...

Molecules in Superfluid Helium Nanodroplets

This open access book covers recent advances in experiments using the ultra-cold, very weakly perturbing superfluid environment provided by helium nanodroplets for high resolution spectroscopic, structural and dynamic studies of molecules and synthetic clusters. The recent infra-red, UV-Vis studies of radicals, molecules, clusters, ions and biomolecules, as well as laser dynamical and laser orientational studies, are reviewed. The Coulomb explosion studies of the uniquely quantum structures of small helium clusters, X-ray imaging of large droplets and electron diffraction of embedded molecules are also described. Particular emphasis is given to the synthesis and detection of new species by mass spectrometry and deposition electron microscopy.
