Utilizing a wide range of theoretical and creative texts, Phillips offers an examination of subjectivity as considered, enacted, and embodied, through the frame of minimalist aesthetics. Provocatively, he makes the claim that lived experience is capable of being refined according to the paradoxically rich parameters of a minimalist aesthetic.

Lauded by critics yet largely unappreciated by fans of horror and "weird fiction," T.E.D. Klein is considered one of the great horror writers, despite his scant body of work. His prose blends the mundane and the supernatural, conjuring the monstrous and the malign with accessible but charged discourse that breaks with the formulaic entries in the genre. Exploring a range of topics from religious fundamentalism and right wing extremism to fashionable pessimism and the rise of "digital humanities," the author argues that Klein's work is a prime example of what he terms "critical horror," a distinct subgenre that entertains while questioning individual and cultural complacency.

The Practical Utopians

An exploration of the ideological conflicts and practical experiences of late-nineteenth-century American workers who pursued "cooperation" as an alternative to "competitive" capitalism. Between 1865 and 1890, in the aftermath of the Civil War, virtually every important American labor reform organization advocated "cooperation" over "competitive" capitalism and several thousand cooperatives opened for business during this era. The men and women who built cooperatives were practical reformers and they established businesses to stabilize their work lives, families, and communities. Yet they were also utopians--envisioning a world free from conflict where workers would receive the full value of...

Like a gatefold album that reveals itself through striking images, text, screaming refrains, the stories of "And the Darkness Back Again"build and overlap. They strike a musical balance between chilling, phantasmagoric treatments of human relations and deadly foibles and the stark language of a 21st century nouveau roman. The collection is also a celebration of the genre that, for many, fascinates from a young age and never quite lets go. What Phillips has called elsewhere "critical horror" is displayed in these thirteen stories to affect tensely atmospheric, occasionally grisly paeans to the magical fears of childhood that become grim way stations in the adult's journey toward fulfillment and extinction.

In the early 1970s, Lew Thomas set out to disrupt photography in San Francisco. Tired of the mystical thinking and emotionalism that had underscored Bay Area photography since the 1940s, Thomas pursued a photographic practice grounded in ideas gleaned from conceptual art and Structuralist philosophy. A cohort of other photographers, including Donna-Lee Phillips and Hal Fischer, embraced Thomas' mission, joining him in what became known as the 'Photography and Language' movement, named after a book and group exhibition of the same title produced by Thomas in 1976. Thomas, Phillips and Fischer were all extremely active in the mid to late 1970s. In addition to making their own artwork, they pub...
