General History of the Caribbean
This volume looks at the ways historians have written the history of the region, depending upon their methods of interpretation and differing styles of communicating their findings. The chapters discussing methodology are followed by studies of particular themes of historiography. The second half of the volume describes the writing of history in the individual territories, taking into account changes in society, economy and political structure. Once the Maroons escaped from slavery and established their communities in the remote interior of Suriname, attention shifted from military threat to internal danger. As they faced these dangers in an unknown rainforest, they sought refuge in prophetic movements directed by charismatic religious leaders. This book charts the history of Okanisi religious movements from their escape to the present day. It is based on sixty years of fieldwork by the late Bonno Thoden van Velzen and Ineke van Wetering, archival research and oral histories. Frontier Society
This classic study was originally published in 1949 in Dutch as Samenleving in een grensgebied. This English translation is based on a second revised Dutch edition from 1971. The point of departure is J.S. Furnivall’s concept of ‘plural society’ to sketch the historical development of Suriname. The author focuses on the social relations that determined life in the colony. In the final part, discussing the period from the abolition of slavery to World War II, relatively more attention is given to the Creoles or Afro-Surinamese than to the populations of Asian descent, because the influence exercised by the Creole group during that period was predominant.
