Thomas Preble (1662-1704) was among the earliest settlers in Baltimore County, Maryland. He married Mary Bucknel, daughter of Thomas and Mary Bucknel of Harford County in 1688, and they had six children. Descendants and relatives lived in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota and elsewhere. Includes some ancestry in England to about 1600.

John Stephen Preble (1774-1859) was the son of Thomas Preble of Fort Redstone (now Brownsville, Pennsylvania). He moved to Bracken County, Kentucky, in about 1799, and later to Circleville, Ohio, and Preble County, Ohio. Descendants lived in Ohio, Indiana, and elsewhere.
