"William Cavendish, Earl (later Duke) of Newcastle, of Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire and Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire, was one of the largest English landowners of his day. In 1629 he appointed the surveyor William Senior to map his extensive estates in seven counties. Over the previous twenty years Senior had undertaken a similar survey for Newcastle's Cavendish cousins - the 1st and 2nd Earls of Devonshire - of Hardwick and Chatsworth in Derbyshire. For both branches of the family Senior produced outstanding examples of vividly coloured maps bound into folio 'atlases'. The Welbeck Atlas contains maps surveyed between 1629 and 1640 for Newcastle's properties in Nottinghamshire (19 maps), De...

"Few historians are more closely associated with Nottinghamshire than Professor John Beckett. In an academic career of forty five years, forty one have been spent at the University of Nottingham... The purpose of this Festschrift is to mark John's contribution of regional history, and especially the history of Nottinghamshire, at a significant intersection of events in his life. ....The rationale for the current volume is that the contributors represent some of the individuals with whom John has collaborated...on topics relating to the history of Nottinghamshire. There are also essays considering Derbyshire and Lincolnshire, the two other east Midland counties with which John has been principally concerned."--Pages 1-2.

One of the most magnificent great house of the Elizabethan period, Hardwick New Hall stands prominently on high ground overlooking the valley of the river Doe Lea in north-east Derbyshire. Built in the 1590s by Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury (best known to history as 'Bess of Hardwick'), the hall is one of the best preserved examples of the work of the architect Robert Smythson and stands in stark contrast to the ruinous remains of the Old Hall also built by Bess in the 1580s. This book looks at the history of both the halls and the wider estate, the changing fortunes of the Cavendish family, and the growth and eventual decline of the coal mining industry in the area. Hardwick: a Great Ho...
