Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary

  • Categories: Art

A massive anthology of texts, visual material, and research on TBA21's commissions and the foundation's vast collection of over 700 artworks. "What survives after the artwork?" asks curator and researcher Natasha Ginwala in one of the essays in Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary: The Commissions Book, a new and comprehensive publication by the art foundation Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TBA21), founded by Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza in Vienna, Austria, in 2002. "The artwork is not just the thing in itself, but also the metaphysical infrastructure and unfinished relationships that produce it," Ginwala writes. In that sense, this anthology of texts, visual material, and research on T...

Essays, research, and art projects that formulate a Tidalectic worldview, addressing our most threatened ecosystem: the oceans. The oceans cover two-thirds of the planet, shaping human history and culture, home to countless species. Yet we, as mostly land-dwelling humans, often fail to grasp the importance of these vast bodies of water. Climate change destabilizes notions of land-based embeddedness, collapses tropes of time and space, and turns our future more oceanic. Tidalectics imagines an oceanic worldview, with essays, research, and artists' projects that present a different way of engaging with our hydrosphere. Unbound by land-based modes of thinking and living, the essays and research...

Twentieth-Century German Painting

  • Categories: Art

Twentieth-centruy German paintings, acquired in the 1960s by the late Baron von Thyseen, form the core of the modern holdings of The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. They revolve around three main groups of artists - Die Brucke, which included Kirckner, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff and Pechstein, Der Blaue Reiter, led by Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and the Neue Sachlichkeit movement of Grosz and Dix. Beckmann, Feininger, Kokoschka, Nolde and Schiele are also significantly represented. This catalogue provides an indispensible overview of the development of German art as a whole during the early years of the twentieth century. A catalogue of 106 paintings by artists as diverse as James Ensor, George Grosz, Emil Nolde, Egon Schiele and Edvard Munch. With an introductory essay offering an overview of the exciting developments taking place in German art in the first half of the century.

During May and June 2006, artist Kutlug Ataman's award-winning film installation Kuba is travelling aboard the Negrelli, a converted container barge, up the Danube River from the Black Sea to Vienna. Slowly, against the current, Kuba will navigate Europe's oldest trade route and cultural artery through Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, Hungary, and Slovakia to its heart in Austria. At each stop, in each country, a new work specifically commissioned by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary is presented in dialogue with Ataman's installation. Matei Bejenaru, Nedko Solakov, Zelimir Zilnik, Renata Poljak, Laszlo Csaki and Szabolcs Palfi, Anetta Mona Chisa and Lucia Tkacova, Emanuel Danesch and David Rych speak in different tongues through their individual artistic projects about minorities, invisible communities, their migrations, histories and memories, and the survival skills learnt to protect their identity and self-representation. This catalogue accompanies the eponymous exhibition at TBA21-Augarten in Vienna and brings together threads and voices of leading contemporary artists, scientists, and theoreticians exploring Cerith Wyn Evans's polyphonic oeuvre. A reality where matter meets dark matter, where the existence of a new elementary particle is conjured from theory--like an alternative world unlocked by psychotropic drugs--and results in the most complex experimental facilities ever built, brings us to the heart of Wyn Evans's new work at the Augarten, A Community Predicated on the Basic Fact Nothing Really Matters, but also figures as a conceptual model for the publication. CERN--the European Laboratory for Parti...
