THE INSTANT INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER How do house flies help save millions of euros? How do the layout of casinos keep you gambling? We are not nearly as rational as we'd like to think – every day we overestimate our ability to resist temptation. Effective advertising experts use this to nudge us, making the most of our natural behaviour to get the results they want. In order to process the millions of decisions we make each day, our brains take shortcuts. We are fooled by drugs that don't contain active ingredients, traffic light buttons that aren't connected, and the obsolete 'save' feature in MS Word – these are all examples of placebos that can be surprisingly reassuring. There are c...

From the peaks of the Himalayas to the historic grounds of Hampton Court, there's always a perfect spot for a picnic! Anne Glenconner invites both old friends and new acquaintances to join her in The Picnic Papers. Featuring contributions from Bryan Adams, Graham Norton, Lorraine, Rupert Everett, Tina Brown, Freya Stark and many more, they explore the curious British obsession with dining alfresco, despite our famously unpredictable weather. Picnics, it turns out, spark strong opinions. HRH Princess Margaret insisted on having hers at a proper table, while the indefatigable John Julius Norwich enjoyed 147 picnics over seven weeks in the Sahara. In stark contrast, writer James Lees-Milne simply loathed them. Brimming with extraordinary tales and a few nostalgic recipes (though this is not a recipe book!) Lady Glenconner's The Picnic Papers is an invitation to a delightful feast of memories and culinary delights.
A central element of contemporary border regimes is their application to migrants before they reach a state's territory. The main forms of this extraterritorial immigration control are visa requirements, pre-embarkation immigration controls and the interception of irregular migrants at sea. This work analyses the complex relationship of the law to these practices, as legal guarantees are potentially avoided, while the legality of control is often uncertain. It examines the international law framework, including the law of the sea and the extraterritorial application of principles of non-refoulement contained in the Refugee Convention and in international human rights law. The work also includes detailed case-studies of the legal challenges posed by extraterritorial immigration controls in Europe, Australia and the United States.

This book examines the continued viability of international human rights law in the context of extraterritorialisation, outsourcing, and privatisation of law enforcement tasks. New forms of state cooperation raise difficult questions about divided, shared and joint responsibility under international human rights law. This book brings together some of the most authoritative legal voices to provide an introduction to core issues such as state responsibility, attribution and extraterritorial jurisdiction, as well as up-to-date case studies of different transnational law enforcement issues. It will interest students, scholars and practitioners of IR, human rights and public international law.
In the autumn of 1999, Chris de Weijer and Robert Alewijnse left Mecanoo Architecten to start up their own office, which they called DP6 architectuurstudio. In the ten years that have passed since then, they have realized a rich and multi-faceted oeuvre. Eighteen projects from this oeuvre - those that most fire the imagination - are presented in DP6. Ten Years of Architecture. They range from the glass towers of the Walterbos complex in Apeldoorn to the archetypical wooden dwelling house in Driebergen, and from the striking red mega-cinema in a noise barrier to near Ede to the bridges for the Zuiderpark in Rotterdam. Besides comprehensive documentation of the projects, the book furnishes ins...
