Bacterial cells are encased in a cell wall, which is required to maintain cell shape and to confer physical strength to the cell. The cell wall allows bacteria to cope with osmotic and environmental challenges and to secure cell integrity during all stages of bacterial growth and propagation, and thus has to be sufficiently rigid. Moreover, to accommodate growth processes, the cell wall at the same time has to be a highly dynamic structure: During cell enlargement, division, and differentiation, bacteria continuously remodel, degrade, and resynthesize their cell wall, but pivotally need to assure cell integrity during these processes. Finally, the cell wall is also adjusted according to both...
Advances in Microbial Physiology, Volume 83 in this ongoing serial, highlights new advances in the field with this new volume presenting interesting chapters. Each chapter is written by an international board of authors. Topics of interest in this update include RidA paradigm, Targeting the cell envelope to overcome antimicrobial resistance, Biosynthesis and function of microbial methylmenaquinones, Antibiotic efficacy, Role of central metabolism/bacterial physiology on tolerance to cell wall-acting antibiotics, and Physiology of diazotrophs. - Provides the authority and expertise of leading contributors from an international board of authors - Presents the latest release in Advances in Microbial Physiology serial - Covers the RidA paradigm, Targeting the cell envelope to overcome antimicrobial resistance, Biosynthesis and function of microbial methylmenaquinones, and more
Safety has been ranked as the number one concern for the acceptance and adoption of automated vehicles since safety has driven some of the most complex requirements in the development of self-driving vehicles. Recent fatal accidents involving self-driving vehicles have uncovered issues in the way some automated vehicle companies approach the design, testing, verification, and validation of their products. Traditionally, automotive safety follows functional safety concepts as detailed in the standard ISO 26262. However, automated driving safety goes beyond this standard and includes other safety concepts such as safety of the intended functionality (SOTIF) and multi-agent safety. The Safety o...
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 42nd International Conference on Computer Safety, Reliability and Security, SAFECOMP 2023, which took place in Toulouse, France, in September 2023. The 20 full papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 100 submissions. They were organized in topical sections as follows: Safety assurance; software testing and reliability; neural networks robustness and monitoring; model-based security and threat analysis; safety of autonomous driving; security engineering; AI safety; and neural networks and testing.
Interdisciplinary development approaches for system-efficient lightweight design unite a comprehensive understanding of materials, processes and methods. This applies particularly to continuous fibre-reinforced plastics (CoFRPs), which offer high weight-specific material properties and enable load path-optimised designs. This thesis is dedicated to understanding and modelling Wet Compression Moulding (WCM) to facilitate large-volume production of CoFRP structural components.
This new volume presents the winners from the Society of News Design's twentieth annual design competition. Selected from more than 12,000 entries, the 1,000 winners represent the best examples of design excellence today. A panel of 21 judges gave awards in several categories, including overall design, news, features, special coverage, special sections, magazines, art and illustration, and photography.
