This is the first full-length publication devoted to Tobias Rehberger, a shooting star on the German art scene. Born in 1966, Rehberger studied at the Frankfurt St'delschule, and has worked in a dizzying variety of media--architecture and sculpture as well as painting, design, and film--over the past five years. Rehberger is a new breed of artist--one whose work combines a future-oriented modernist ethic with a postmodern sense of play and disdain for categorical distinctions.Tobias Rehberger: 005-000 provides an overview of the artist's exhibition activities in museums and galleries as well as in public spaces, including the Tsutsumu garden, his recent installation at the Hanover EXPO 2000. This publication, one of the first books devoted to Rehberger alone, features personal and critical texts by such artists and scholars as Daniel Birnbaum, Francesco Bonami, Florian Matzner, Markus Mller, and Pierluigi Tazzi.

Rehberger's artistic work covers a broad range of objects, sculptures and installations that exist somewhere in-between art and everyday culture. Evoking the spirit of today, his work sensually plays out the interactive moments of art, life and design as its central themes. When creating his complex installations Rehberger makes use of invention, alienation and reconstruction. This artistic approach is reflected in his three installations ?Fragment, ? dating from 1996, 1999 and 2009. The Fragment-series offers a seismographic retrospective of the change that real life and an artist's living habits experienced over the last 15 years. At the same time, it puts in focus a way of handling art and conventions, standards and styles.

Art Intervention in the City

This book focuses on the phenomenon of art intervention—an expression of local initiatives by artists, collectives, and art centers wishing to influence the design of the space or make a change in its lifestyle. It pertains not only to acts of protest, but also to the creation of a new civil and political situation in which artists acknowledge their ability to constitute foci of power. These are reflected in acts such as squatting in abandoned buildings, restoring and redistributing them according to principles of social justice; mapping the city based on alternative parameters, such as revealing venues of collective memory or exposing the city's backyard; creating outdoor urban art galler...

From the Publisher: Art Now Volume I brings together the recent work and biographical information for our selection of the 150 most influential artists working at the end of the 20th century. Art Now also includes a sort of service guide, produced in collaboration with The Art Newspaper, which lists museums, restaurants, and hotels we recommend you check out while you're cruising the global art scene, and even gives the scoop on how much one can expect to pay for a Damien Hirst or a Sharon Lockhart and whom to contact if you decide to buy. We also let you know useful details like how many prints Wolfgang Tillmans made for a certain edition and what sorts of sums big players like Koons, Sherman, and Struth bring in at auction. Think of it as an indispensable reference book, travel guide, and art market directory all rolled into one.
