De autobiografie is booming business. Op de hedendaagse boekenmarkt verschijnt een groot aantal levensverhalen, variërend van memoires van beroemde personen tot herinneringen van ‘gewone’ mensen in bijzondere omstandigheden. De interesse voor persoonlijke geschiedenis is niet nieuw, zo blijkt uit Publieke levens. Tussen 1850 en 1918 verdrievoudigde het aantal gedrukte autobiografieën bijna. Marijke Huisman onderzoekt deze stijging in het licht van ontwikkelingen op de 19de-eeuwse boekenmarkt. Zij behandelt de plaats en betekenis van autobiografieën binnen het totale boekenaanbod, de marketing en het beleid van uitgevers, alsmede de ontvangst van autobiografieën door de literaire kritiek. De studie besluit met een uitgebreide analyse van de manieren waarop vrouwen zich via de boekenmarkt wisten te manifesteren als de auteurs van hun eigen levensverhaal.
