This field book documents botanical collecting by Rafael Andrés Toro in 1927-1928 in Colombia. It is comprised of a typewritten list of loose sheets listing specimen numbers 1-1380, and appears to have been compiled in sections at different times and copies sent to Toro. Some of the later pages contain corrections to earlier specimen numbers. Entries have plant name only, there are no collection locations or dates. Most were collected in the vicinity of Medellín. There are some handwritten corrections to the list.
This book reveals the history behind the trade of Colombian birds as a means of comprehending the scientific, economic and environmental relations between the United States and Colombia from the 1880s to the 1960s. Through the study of the feather trade, scientific expeditions, scientific communities and nature conservation, the author brings to light how international relations and national agendas shaped the study and perception of nature in both countries during those years.
Although Law 300, 1996, legislated for supporting tourism in municipalities, few have made use of the law. This suggests that tourism is not a regional development priority. However, this lack of interest does not reflect a lack of political will. The tourism sector has enjoyed varied forms of support since the beginning of the 20th Century. One of the most important indicators was the formation of the National Tourism Corporation - an organisation that regulated, controlled and promoted tourism in Colombia throughout its 30 year existence. In spite of the Corporation's demise, tourism has not been forgotten. The last three governments have made important efforts in the following areas: national level studies, new regulations, competitiveness agreements, restructuring of state tourism organisations and the promotion and reactivation of tourist destinations. Thus, it is true to say that there is a public policy for tourism, an example of which is the sectorial tourism plan 2002-2006 - a plan designed to make tourism a notable contributor to the Colombian economy by 2020.
