The Unintended Consequences of Peace
Scholars of international relations generally consider that under conditions of violent conflict and war, smuggling and trans-border crime are likely to thrive. In contrast, this book argues that in fact it is globalisation and peaceful borders that have enabled transnational illicit flows conducted by violent non-state actors, including transnational criminal organizations, drug trafficking organizations, and terrorist cells, who exploit the looseness and demilitarization of borderlands. Empirically, the book draws on case studies from the Americas, compared with other regions of the world experiencing similar phenomena, including the European Union and Southeast Europe (the Western Balkans), Southern Africa, and Southeast Asia. To explain the phenomenon in itself, the authors examine the type of peaceful borders and regimes involved in each case; how strong each country is in the governance of their borderlands; their political willingness to control their peaceful borders; and the prevailing socio-economic conditions across the borderlands.
Colombian Gothic in Cinema and Literature
The Colombian Gothic in Cinema and Literature traces the aesthetic and political development of the Gothic genre in Colombia. Gabriel Eljaiek-Rodríguez shows how, in the hands of Colombian writers and filmmakers, Gothic tropes are taken to their extremes to reflect particularly Colombian issues, like the ongoing armed conflict in the country since the 1950s as various left wing guerillas, government factions and paramilitary groups escalated violence. In this context, collectives such as the “Cali group” challenge both the centrality of US and European Gothics as well as the centrality of Bogota-centered perspectives of Colombian politics and conflict. The book demonstrates how writers and filmmakers transform the European and American Gothic to show genealogical links between colonization, imperialism and domestic elites’ maintenance of social inequalities.

El camino hacia la paz: investigaciones sobre la violencia y la paz en Colombia
El espacio académico electivo "Estudios Afrocolombianos y Afrolatinoamericanos" brinda un panorama introductorio al estudio de las cuestiones afrocolombianas y afroamericanas. Acá se analizará la cuestión afrocolombiana en la Constitución de 1991 y, a los 18 años de la Ley 70 de julio de 1993, relevar hasta dónde se ha dado la cuestión de reparación histórica y reconocimiento al derecho al territorio para las comunidades afrocolombianas, así como cartografiar la cuestión en América Latina. Tendrá tres ejes de discusión: el lugar de la raza en la construcción de nación; la producción actual y pasada de cultura negra; y los procesos de racialización y etnización en Colombia y Latinoamérica.
Análisis de la frontera Colombia-Venezuela
Esta obra es resultado del trabajo adelantado por los autores en las líneas de acción del Centro de Pensamiento UNCaribe y del grupo de investigación “Agenda Internacional”, ambos de la Universidad del Norte. Se enmarca en la iniciativa de este grupo de articular una serie de trabajos académicos e investigativos sobre las fronteras colombianas y sus reales posibilidades (y desafíos de integración, no solo con sus pares vecinos, sino también con los centros político administrativos del interior del país. Se presenta un análisis multidimensional de la frontera colombo-venezolana a partir de los seis componentes básicos propuestos por Benedetti y Laguado (2013: diferenciación territorial, fronterización, territorios subnacionales o inferiores, territorios exteriores, lugares de frontera y movilidades. De manera novedosa se incluye una séptima categoría que busca identificar si existen o no iniciativas, estrategias o propuestas para promover la integración y el desarrollo de las relaciones fronterizas desde los municipios colombianos.
