Historical Dictionary of Slovakia

On the stroke of midnight on 1 January 2013, the inhabitants of Slovakia celebrated a major milestone in their history: two decades of democratic government and personal freedom. This is so far the longest period of such rule in their history. This anniversary surpasses by a few months their only previous, generation-long, experience, namely in the First Czecho-Slovak Republic (1918-1938). The A to Z of Slovakia

The A to Z of Slovakia offers an up to date series of cross-referenced dictionary entries on Slovak political, social, and economic development since the creation of the second Slovak Republic in 1993 until its admission into the European Union in 2004. It includes all of the political actors: the presidents, prime ministers, and party leaders, and many leading academics and cultural personalities, including those from the national minorities. It also contains entries on the various institutions of the Slovak Republic like the judiciary, the armed forces, the media, and parliamentary committees as well as entries that explain Slovakia's position and role in international organizations like NATO and the European Union. The historical survey explains how Slovakia, in its post-Communist transformation, was almost excluded, but in the end became a full member of these two institutions.

This study investigates the outcomes of dialect contact in Smolenice, a village of 3,500 inhabitants in western Slovakia. By analyzing data obtained from recordings of local residents and from a questionnaire, I examine how the local Trnava dialect and Standard Slovak influence each other; whether there are signs of the formation of an intermediate variety in the speech of Smolenice residents; and what the speakers’ attitudes are towards the two codes and towards a possible mixing of them. The contact between Standard Slovak and the Trnava dialect is interesting for a number of reasons. The first is connected with the historic and socio-economic conditions in Slovakia. It has been hypothes...
