La guerra con la Francia
Il 14 giugno 1940, dopo soli quattro giorni dall’entrata in guerra dell’Italia, una formazione navale francese salpata da Tolone e composta dagli incrociatori pesanti Dupleix e Colbert e dai cacciatorpediniere Vautour e Albatros e altre unità prese a cannonate la zona industriale di Genova, tra Sestri Ponente e Arenzano oltre agli impianti industriali di Savona e Vado Ligure. La reazione delle batterie costiere italiane danneggiò gravemente il caccia Albatros, mentre la Regia Marina, presente sul posto con la sola torpediniera Calatafimi poté fare ben poco. Il bombardamento francese causò comunque pochi danni materiali, e poche perdite tra i civili, meno di dieci fra morti e feriti. Oltre a questo primo esemplare episodio, il poderoso saggio di Mattesini tratta del conflitto navale ed aereo, con accenno anche alle operazioni terrestri, della breve guerra tra l’Italia e la Francia, tra l’11 giugno e il 25 giugno 1940, giorno dell’armistizio.
