As explained, the first beginnings of this phenomenon can be traced well bac...

Essay aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Philosophie - Philosophie der Antike, Note: 1,3, University of Windsor (Faculty of Philosophy), Veranstaltung: Introduction to Western Philosophy, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In his work “Republic”, the ancient Athenian philosopher Plato, scholar of the famous Socrates, develops his view of what a 'good' city and a 'good' individual should look like. Beginning with the question “What is justice?” in the books 1-4, he soon turns to the question about how a good city is organized and – related to that – by whom it should be ruled. Plato's main messages of the books 5-7 are that (1) there is a fundamental difference between what we see (appearance) and what things are (reality), as well as that (2) there cannot be knowledge about appearances, but only about reality. Furthermore, Plato claims that normal people can not know the reality. Only true and genuine philosophers could truly know what is real. Therefore they should be the rulers of the ideal city (Kallipolis). This essay retraces Plato's argumentation and includes an explaining illustration of the famous "Allegory of the cave", which Plato uses to make his case.

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, grade: 1.0, University of Mannheim (Department of Economics), course: New Approaches to Economic and Public Policy, language: English, abstract: This paper aims at providing a concise description of the current state of the discussion around the mechanism of Harberger taxation, and Posner & Weyl’s proposal to universally implement it. In a second part, some thoughts on the consequences of a particularly relevant concern are explored: the failure of agents to assess the value of their property. This might lead to the Harberger tax placing potentially rather different effective tax rates on asset owner...

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 1.0, University of Mannheim (Department of Economics), course: Topics on Monetary Union, language: English, abstract: The question of why regions, that cooperate in a federal union, overborrow—meaning that they issue more debt than would be beneficial from a point-of-view of intertemporal efficiency—is of utmost relevance in many contexts. Traditionally, the role of fiscal rules (i.e. caps on debt issuance levels with punishment payments upon violation) has been emphasized in overcoming the root of the problem: that central authorities in federal unions cannot commit to not use their funds to bail out overindebted ...

Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Philosophy - General Essays, Eras, grade: 1,3, , course: Introduction to western Philosophy, language: English, abstract: The human freedom and the human capability to reflect about the circumstances of our existence are phenomenons that have puzzled philosophers, anthropologists and other scientists alike, since we can think. Over the course of history, especially the art of philosophy has seen many great thinkers reflecting on the nature of human freedom: Three of them – Plato, René Descartes, and Albert Camus – are the material on which this paper will retrace the development of the interpretation of human freedom. In doing so, it is very impor...

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, grade: 1,0, University of Windsor (Faculty of History), course: Introduction to the Arab culture, language: English, abstract: Violent religious extremism is to be found nearly everywhere in human history. Yet, it seems today, as if the Arab world – and most lately Syria – would be the 'hub' of religiously motivated terrorist activities. But where do these movements come from? What are their roots? The key assumption of this paper is, that the origin of religious extremism (but not necessarily religious extremism itself) is to seek in the rise of political Islam in the middle of the 20th century. Therefore, the central question to answering the questions above is: How could a constructive force, like the political Islam, lay the foundations for such a destructive force as is Islamist terrorism?
