Harold Cleaver ist auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Karriere als Fernsehjournalist. Über sein denkwürdiges Interview mit dem amerikanischen Präsidenten spricht man im ganzen Land, nicht nur in London. Man spricht aber auch über das gerade erschienene Buch seines Sohnes, ein kaum verschlüsselter Roman über seinen Vater: "Im Schatten des Allmächtigen". Und plötzlich ist ihm klar, dass er weg muss. Weg von der medialen Öffentlichkeit, weg von seiner langjährigen Lebensgefährtin und den gemeinsamen Kindern. Das Bedürfnis nach Stille ist übermächtig. Er bucht einen Flug nach Mailand und fährt in ein entlegenes Dorf in Südtirol, um dort eine Hütte "über der Lärmgrenze" zu finden, wo er für niemanden mehr erreichbar ist. Wochen später, eingeschneit in dieser abgelegenen Hütte, muss er feststellen, dass die Stille kein Garant für Ruhe ist und dass nichts so verstörend ist wie die Stimmen im eigenen Kopf.
