Analysis of Low-Speed Unsteady Airfoil Flows

The standard textbooks on aerodynamics usually omit any discussion of un steady aerodynamics or, at most, consider it only in a single chapter, based on two justifications. The first is that unsteady aerodynamics should be regarded as a specialized subject required "only" in connection with understanding and an alyzing aeroelastic phenomena such as flutter and gust response, and therefore should be dealt with in related specialist books. The second reason appears to be reluctance to discuss aerodynamics with the inclusion of the time-dependent terms in the conservation equations and the boundary conditions for fear that added complications may discourage the reader. We take the opposite view...

In this book, the author introduces the concept of unsteady aerodynamics and its underlying principles. He provides the readers with a comprehensive review of the fundamental physics of free and forced unsteadiness, the terminology and basic equations of aerodynamics ranging from incompressible flow to hypersonics. The book also covers modern topics related to the developments made in recent years, especially in relation to wing flapping for propulsion. The book is written for graduate and senior year undergraduate students in aerodynamics and also serves as a reference for experienced researchers. Each chapter includes ample examples, questions, problems and relevant references. The treatment of these modern topics has been completely revised end expanded for the new edition. It now includes new numerical examples, a section on the ground effect, and state-space representation.

Unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics in Aeronautics

The field of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and hybrids is a vibrant research area. This book runs through all the potential unsteady modelling fidelity ranges, from low-order to LES. The latter is probably the highest fidelity for practical aerospace systems modelling. Cutting edge new frontiers are defined. One example of a pressing environmental concern is noise. For the accurate prediction of this, unsteady modelling is needed. Hence computational aeroacoustics is explored. It is also emerging that there is a critical need for coupled simulations. Hence, this area is also considered and the tensions of utilizing such simulations with the already expensive LES. This work has relevance to the...

Unsteady Aerodynamics, Aeroacoustics, and Aeroelasticity of Turbomachines and Propellers

The first International Symposium on Unsteady Aerodynamics and Aero elasticity of Turbomachines was held in Paris in 1976, and was followed by symposia at Lausanne in 1980, Cambridge in 1984, Aachen in 1987, Bei jing in 1989, and Notre Dame in 1991. The proceedings published following these symposia have become recognized both as basic reference texts in the subject area and as useful guides to progress in the field. It is hoped that this volume, which represents the proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Unsteady Aerodynamics of Turbomachines, will continue that tradition. Interest in the unsteady aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, and aeroelasticity of turbomachines has been growing...

Progress in Vehicle Aerodynamics: Unsteady flow effects

Unsteady flow effects observed on a vehicle are to be distinguished according to the character of the oncoming flow. This flow can be in steady state as during a cruise in calm weather - or in a wind tunnel. Unsteady flow may originate from abrupt changes at otherwise steady conditions of the oncoming flow, and it may be caused by fully turbulent oncoming flow, having a boundary layer velocity profile. Up to quite recently vehicle aerodynamics has dealt with the latter two phenomena only, if at all. However, unsteadiness of flow may be the origin of higher forces and moments, either stochastic or periodic - with a frequency content close to the natural frequencies of a body and/or chassis, and may modulate wind noise in a way to impair comfort. Contents: Character of the oncoming flow - Description of unsteady flows - Large scale fluctuations - Vehicle and driver in cross wind - Generation of unsteady flows in experiments - Measurements in unsteady flows - Numerical simulation of unsteady flows

Unsteady Aerodynamics

Unsteady Aerodynamics A comprehensive overview of unsteady aerodynamics and its applications The study of unsteady aerodynamics goes back a century and has only become more significant as aircraft become increasingly sophisticated, fly faster, and their structures are lighter and more flexible. Progress in the understanding of flow physics, computing power and techniques, and modelling technologies has led to corresponding progress in unsteady aerodynamics, with a wide range of methods currently used to predict the performance of engineering structures under unsteady conditions. Unsteady Aerodynamics offers a comprehensive and systematic overview of the application of potential and vortex me...
