Black Ladies

Uwe Ommer, a sought-after commercial photographer based in New York and Paris, has made a name for himself with his own uncommissioned works, as this book eloquently attests. For the aesthete Uwe Ommer, the bodies of black women represent the epitome of beauty. His photographs are exactly what they show, no more and no less than a homage to female beauty. And of course that homage is paid in the perfect setting, the stunning landscape of Africa.

Uwe Ommer was born in 1943 in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. He won the German youth prize for photography in 1962 and then moved to Paris in the same year, where he still lives. Here he worked as assistant to Jean Pierre Ronzel, the famous photographer. Since the 1970s, Uwe Ommer has become one of the world's most sought-after commercial photographers, working for Charles Jourdan (who produced the most expensive shoes of the 70s and 80s). His aesthetic nudes have been published in Esquire, Lui, Photographie, and Zoom. Many books, such as Asian Ladies, Black Ladies, Do It Yourself, and Exotic, as well as the Pirelli Calendar, have made his exotic, erotic photographs especially popular. His volume 1000 Families contained photos by Ommer of families from all over the world, each taken in front of a neutral, white background. In 2002, Uwe Ommer received a lifetime achievement award from the Royal Photographic Society. This large-format book presents not only some of his more famous photos, but also several previously unpublished works, all selected from the rich back catalog of this master of erotic photography.

Uwe Ommer is a photographer of beautiful women and landscapes. He is a traveller into different continents of desire, using his camera to record his discoveries. Western man's exploration of far-flung countries has always been fundamentally connected with sexual discovery, the locating of the Other as seductive female. In travel there is the latent possibility of liberation -- moving beyond the conventions and inhibitions of your own society. Ommer's lens perfectly captures that charge of erotic freedom and expression. The Asian Ladies of this volume were photographed in some of the most beautiful places on earth, the tropical regions of the Philippines, Thailand and the South Sea Islands, the idyllic beaches of Tahiti and Fiji. Locations that have inspired artists as diverse as Gauguin and Nerval to produce their finest works. Ommer examines the implicit sexuality of those poetic landscapes, and with the clarity of his sumptuous photographs has created images of yearning and mystery. A journey into myth and sensuality from which it may be difficult to return.

Arming participants with cameras and basic technical instructions, Ommer asked people to photograph themselves in any way they pleased--liberated, so to speak, from the voyeuristic eye of the photographer. Some chose to use mirrors as they captured their portraits, while others braved the camera without the help of their reflections.
