Early Modern Wales, C.1536-1689
This is the first general history of early modern Wales for more than a generation. The book assimilates new scholarship and deploys a wealth of original archival research to present a fresh picture of Wales under the Tudor and Stuart monarchs. It adopts novel perspectives on concepts of Welsh identity and allegiance to examine epochal events, such as the union of England and Wales under Henry VIII; the Reformation and the Break with Rome; and the British Civil Wars and Glorious Revolution. It argues that Welsh experiences during this period can best be captured through widespread attachments to a shared history and language, and to ideas of Britishness and monarchy. The volume looks beyond high politics to examine the rich tapestry of early modern Welsh life, considering concepts of gender and women's experiences; the role of language and cultural change; and expressions of Welsh identity beyond the principality's borders.
Representing Irish Religious Histories
This collection begins on the premise that, until recently, religion has been particularly influential in Ireland in forming a sense of identity, and in creating certain versions of reality. History has also been a key component in that process, and the historical evolution of Christianity has been appropriated by the main religious denominations – Catholic, Church of Ireland, and Presbyterian – with a view to reinforcing their own identities. This book explores the ways in which this occurred; the writing of religious history, and some of the manifestations of that process, forms key parts of the collection. Also included are chapters discussing current and recent attempts to examine the legacy of collective religious memory - notably in Northern Ireland - based on projects designed to encourage reflection about the religious past among both adults and school-children. The Churchwardens’ Accounts of St. Botolph without Aldersgate, London, 1466-1500
This volume contains transcriptions of rolls 1 to 20 (1466-1500) of the 105 (1466-1636) extant rolls of churchwardens’ accounts from the parish of St Botolph without Aldersgate, London. These financial records, along with assorted memoranda, are filled with information about the church, its operations, and the numerous people who repaired, maintained, and provisioned it. The churchwardens dealt with local problems and kept track of money they believed they were owed. These records not only present very detailed insights into a vanished world, but the resulting evidence augments and challenges existing theories about the fifteenth-century parish.
