House X at Kommos

House X is by far the largest and best appointed of the Minoan houses excavated at Kommos in south-central Crete, a Minoan harbor and settlement that later became the site of a Greek sanctuary. Situated on the seacoast of the western Mesara Plain, Kommos faces west toward the Libyan Sea. House X stands on the southern edge of the Minoan town, separated by a large slab-paved road from the monumental civic buildings built and used between the Protopalatial and Postpalatial periods. The description of the stratigraphic excavation of this elite house is published with numerous architectural plans along with the cataloged small finds and tables of data on the floral and faunal materials. The excavated fresco fragments are also discussed and illustrated.

During the pioneering years of archaeological exploration in Crete, between 1900 and 1904, the American archaeologist Harriet Ann Boyd excavated a number of sites on the Isthmus of Ierapetra. The results of these excavations and particularly that of the Bronze Age site at Gournia, were published by Boyd in a series of preliminary reports and in a final publication. But the basic source of information for any comprehensive reconsideration of archaeological material -the excavation records- was largely lacking. In 1990 an important part of the lost original archive, consisting of excavation notebooks, miscellaneous notes and drafts of reports, letters and financial records, came to light. This...

New Directions and Paradigms for the Study of Greek Architecture comprises 20 chapters by nearly three dozen scholars who describe recent discoveries, new theoretical frameworks, and applications of cutting-edge techniques in their architectural research. The contributions are united by several broad themes that represent the current directions of study in the field, i.e.: the organization and techniques used by ancient Greek builders and designers; the use and life history of Greek monuments over time; the communication of ancient monuments with their intended audiences together with their reception by later viewers; the mining of large sets of architectural data for socio-economic inference; and the recreation and simulation of audio-visual experiences of ancient monuments and sites by means of digital technologies.
