Usually the term 'innovation' is used in connection with artists' and authors' themes and techniques. What we see in most studies about innovation is that its problematic aspects are related to problems in literary or artistic history and that scholars try to solve those problems in work-oriented research. Some scholars, however, especially emperical sociologists, claim that problems with respect to innovation cannot be solved without analyzing the cultural area where those problems arise. The major question that this book discusses concerns the role of art committees, literary, art and film critics, art collectors, museum directors, academic writers and other 'gatekeepers' with regard to different forms of art in the interbellum period as well as after World War II.

In de multidisciplinaire kunstkring konden beoefenaars en liefhebbers van de beeldende kunst, de kunstindustrie (architectuur en kunstnijverheid), de toonkunst en de letterkunde (literatuur, voordracht, toneel en kunstkritiek) met elkaar in contact komen. Belangrijkste doel van de kring was het kweken van waardering voor uitingen van kunst, uiteraard in een aangename entourage. Beschreven worden de geschiedenis van de verschillende multidisciplinaire kunstkringen zelf - met als voornaamste de Haagsche kunstkring (1891) en Rotterdamsche kunstkring (1893) - en de achtergronden, doelstellingen en betekenis van dit genootschapstype gesitueerd in het kunstzinnige gezelschapsleven in het algemeen, om zo meer licht te werpen op de nog betrekkelijk weinig bestudeerde kunstzinnige sociabiliteit van na 1850.

The language of some eighteen million people living at the junction of the two great cultures of western Europe, Romance and Germanic, is now taught by some 262 teachers at I43 universities outside the Netherlands, ineluding Finland, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Czecho slovakia, Portugal, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea.
