Crossing Cultures
Crossing Cultures brings together scholars in the field of reception and translation studies to chart the individual and institutional agencies that determined the reception of Anglophone authors in the Dutch and Belgian literary fields in the course of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. The essays offer a variety of angles from which nineteenth-century literary dynamics in the Low Countries can be studied. The first two parts discuss the reception of Anglophone literature in the Netherlands and Belgium, respectively, while the third part focuses exclusively on the Dutch translation of women writers.
Readings on Audience and Textual Materiality

New Trends in Modern Dutch Literature
This volume contains a selection of essays presented at the international conference of Cultural Crises in Art and Literature, held in Groningen in November 2002, in special sessions concerning modern Dutch literature. The recent decennia have shown a gradual transition in Netherlandic Studies towards new scopes: a contextual orientation of literature and the reception of 'Theory'. The contributions to this volume touch upon the theme of cultural crises from the perspective of these frameworks, approaching topics like the interrelation of literary representation and historical and medical discourse concerning the obsession by dirt, contamination, and dust; the impact of nationalism and humanism (in the political field) on literary education; the decline of modernism, resulting in the changing position of women authors, the rise of children's literature and the reassessment of 'low' genres like melodrama. A brief outline of the development of the study of modern Dutch literature opens this volume, the presentation of a general theoretical and methodological framework for conceptualizing the notion of cultural crisis concludes it.
Irish Literature in Italy in the Era of the World Wars
This book addresses both the dissemination and increased understanding of the specificity of Irish literature in Italy during the first half of the twentieth century. This period was a crucial time of nation-building for both countries. Antonio Bibbò illustrates the various images of Ireland that circulated in Italy, focusing on political and cultural discourses and examines the laborious formation of an Irish literary canon in Italy. The center of this analysis relies on books and articles on Irish politics, culture, and literature produced in Italy, including pamplets, anthologies, literary histories, and propaganda; translations of texts by Irish writers; and archival material produced by writers, publishers, and cultural and political institutions. Bibbò argues that the construction of different and often conflicting ideas of Ireland in Italy as well as the wavering understanding of the distinctiveness of Irish culture, substantially affected the Italian responses to Irish writers and their presence within the Italian publishing field. This book contributes to the discussion on transnational aspects of canon formation, reception studies, and Italian cultural studies.

The genesis of this book was the 9th Congress of the European Society for Translation Studies, held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in September 2019 – the first time the event took place outside Europe. “Living Translation – People, Processes, Products” was the Congress theme. In 1848 werd door zeven jonge Engelse schilders en schrijvers de ‘Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood’ opgericht. Zij wilden zich gezamenlijk inzetten voor de vernieuwing van de kunsten. Aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw groeide het prerafaëlitisme uit tot een brede culturele beweging. Met de term ‘prerafaëlitisme’ werd niet langer alleen het werk van de leden van de broederschap aangeduid, maar ook andere Engelse literatuur, beeldende en toegepaste kunst uit de periode 1848-1900. Dit amalgaam van Engelse literatuur en kunst heeft in Nederland een grote impact gehad. Deze studie biedt een chronologisch overzicht van de receptie van het prerafaëlitisme in Nederland en vijf casestudies over de receptie-activiteiten van de schrijvers Frederik van Eeden, Edward B. "This volume offers a multifaceted selection of studies on 19th-century Belgian reformers and initiatives they instigated to solve the ‘social question’ by ‘civilising’ and moralising the lower classes. Around 1850 Belgium was continental Europe’s most heavily industrialised state. From the mid-century until the Belle Époque many international social reform associations were based in Belgium, as well as their main international actors. This book aims to place the history of social, moral and educational reform in Belgium during the long 19th century within a broader European perspective. This collection of contributions by both young and established scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds not only fills some gaps in Belgian historiography, but also offers a better understanding of broad epochal processes such as the bourgeois civilising offensive, the expansion of educational action and the historical growth of welfare states.
