Within the field of pediatric colorectal and pelvic reconstruction, the most complex anatomic problem a pediatric surgeon can face is that of a cloacal malformation. The urinary tract, gynecologic system, and distal bowel all fuse into a single common channel which must be surgically reconstructed. The care of patients with a cloaca is daunting, and the spectrum of anatomic variations very wide. In this book about cloaca, the authors have brought organization to the complex, providing basic principles of care, from fetal and newborn management to the reconstruction of bowel, gynecologic systems, and urinary tracts as well as the care of patients after surgery to puberty and beyond. This is a...

Fertility Preservation in the Pediatric Population

Fertility Preservation in the Pediatric Population

Fertility preservation in children has long only been considered for those facing gonadotoxic treatments in the setting of new diagnoses of cancer. However, this field is now being expanded to include children with other conditions affecting fertility such as rheumatologic/nephrologic disease and even the transgender population, where fertility preservation counseling and discussion is in its infancy. Research regarding the optimal methods, timing, and eventual outcomes of both ovarian and testicular tissue storage in prepubertal girls and boys, respectively, as well as data on outcomes of oocyte and semen cryopreservation in adolescence is lacking. Deriving mainly from literature in adults, ovarian tissue cryopreservation has recently been deemed non-experimental; knowledge gaps still exist in the pediatric population.

The development, manufacturing, and use of contraceptive methods from the late nineteenth century to the present, viewed from the perspective of reproductive justice. In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Donna Drucker traces the history of modern contraception, outlining the development, manufacturing, and use of contraceptive methods fr...
