In the USA, the number of college students with limited English proficiency is increasing. Even after successfully completing a course of English as a second language, many face both linguistic and cultural barriers in mainstream classes. This book focuses on both the theory and practice of assisting such students, especially in the sciences. As the number of non-native English speaking students increases at colleges and universities, innovative approaches are needed to successfully educate this population and how science is taught may be crucial. Instruction in the students' native language may become increasingly important in attracting and retaining non-native English speakers in college. This book is aimed primarily at staff who teach science to LEP undergraduates, but others who should be interested include staff involved with postgraduate students and high school science teachers.
A friendly and systematic introduction to the theory and applications. The book begins with the sums of independent random variables and vectors, with maximal inequalities and sharp estimates on moments, which are later used to develop and interpret decoupling inequalities. Decoupling is first introduced as it applies to randomly stopped processes and unbiased estimation. The authors then proceed with the theory of decoupling in full generality, paying special attention to comparison and interplay between martingale and decoupling theory, and to applications. These include limit theorems, moment and exponential inequalities for martingales and more general dependence structures, biostatistical implications, and moment convergence in Anscombe's theorem and Wald's equation for U--statistics. Addressed to researchers in probability and statistics and to graduates, the expositon is at the level of a second graduate probability course, with a good portion of the material fit for use in a first year course.

Statistical science as organized in formal academic departments is relatively new. With a few exceptions, most Statistics and Biostatistics departments have been created within the past 60 years. This book consists of a set of memoirs, one for each department in the U.S. created by the mid-1960s. The memoirs describe key aspects of the department’s history -- its founding, its growth, key people in its development, success stories (such as major research accomplishments) and the occasional failure story, PhD graduates who have had a significant impact, its impact on statistical education, and a summary of where the department stands today and its vision for the future. In Secrets of Pinar’s Game, Roger Boase is the first to decipher a card game completed in 1496 for Queen Isabel, Prince Juan, her daughters and her 40 court ladies. This game offers readers access to the cultural memory of a group of educated women, revealing their knowledge of proverbs, poetry and sentimental romance, their understanding of the symbolism of birds and trees, and many facts ignored in official sources. Boase translates all verse into English, reassesses the jousting invenciones in the Cancionero general (1511), reinterprets the poetry of Pinar’s sister Florencia, and identifies Acevedo, author of some poems about festivities in Murcia c. 1507. He demonstrates that many of Pinar’s ladies reappear as prostitutes in the anonymous Carajicomedia two decades later.
Singing for the Dead chronicles ethnic revival in Oaxaca, Mexico, where new forms of singing and writing in the local Mazatec indigenous language are producing powerful, transformative political effects. Paja Faudree argues for the inclusion of singing as a necessary component in the polarized debates about indigenous orality and literacy, and she considers how the coupling of literacy and song has allowed people from the region to create texts of enduring social resonance. She examines how local young people are learning to read and write in Mazatec as a result of the region's new Day of the Dead song contest. Faudree also studies how tourist interest in local psychedelic mushrooms has led to their commodification, producing both opportunities and challenges for songwriters and others who represent Mazatec culture. She situates these revival movements within the contexts of Mexico and Latin America, as well as the broad, hemisphere-wide movement to create indigenous literatures.
