The history of this southern-most part of Bosnia Herzegovina is storied and complex. It has weathered many an invading army, as well as many a government. Croatian pride runs rampant through the region and you’ll see more Croatian flags than Bosnia Herzegovina ones wherever you go. This confusing, split personality of the land ironically doesn’t come in to the wine, except for the fact that almost all, if not all of the winemakers are people with Croatian origins. Wine production is mostly centered on two main hubs: Čitluk and Međugorje. These are both so deep in the south and near the border of Croatia that if you take a wrong turn, you’ll end up in Dalmatia. The main grapes of Blatina and Žilavka grow abundantly along these rolling, inland hills and valleys and provide a great variety of delicious tastes. Let our Herzegovina guide take you in to the interior and explore these wines.
One of the oldest “New World” regions, wine has been produced in Stellenbosch and Cape Town at large for more than 350 years. These years of experience have paid off in creating wonderfully delicious wines for centuries now. From the standard European grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot to their signature Pinotage, the Stellenbosch area produces great amounts of wine and our guide is here to take you through it. We take readers through all five main sub-regions of Stellenbosch: Greater Simonsberg, Stellenbosch Berg, Helderberg, Stellenbosch Hills, and Bottlelary Hills. Breaking down the wines, we also talk about the features of the wineries and what sets them apart from one another. In addition to winery information, we also provide GPS locations of the wineries and tips for getting around to the best wineries in the region.
Often mistakenly referred to as the “affordable Priorat” which it wraps around, the DO Montsant was established just 10 years ago but has been a land of family winemakers for centuries. A rolling landscape, it’s boxed in by the sharp, craggy Montsant mountain range from which the wines receive their name. Countless lovely old vines (older even than those in neighboring Priorat) of Grenache, Carignan, and Tempranillo form the backbone of the wines in this crescent shaped zone. The first edition of this enotourism guide has 65 extensive winery profiles in Montsant with GPS coordinates, hundreds of full color photos, maps, and tasting notes for 225 wines.
Want to take off on that wild wine excursion to Bordeaux or Rioja or Tuscany? This enotourism guide was created by the Vinologue authors to give you an introduction to visiting and tasting the wines of the world.
