Noted and notorious for his conceptually based body art and performance pieces of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Vito Acconci has uniquely invigorated the American art scene for more than two decades and has exerted a profound influence on the current generation of artists. This first full-scale study of the artist's career traces the shift from his early "language pieces" to his first visual art in 1969 (photographs that recorded the actions of his body - bending, throwing, jumping - in a landscape) to the filmed live performances and provocative installations of the 1970s and to his sculptural furniture and architecture and the public projects of the 1980s and early 1990s.
